PS3 was overheating (i belive) and always get pixalllated screen freeze after about 5 mins.No lights flash or change or beep or YLOD
Put large fan behind and have done fan tests and PS3 works longer BUT is unpredictable - somedays can work for a very long time and other days just the 5 mins
PS3 has always been in a open area and have tried vertical position and hoovering makes no difference
Does this pinpoint a specfic problem -i suppose i need to open it up? -or should i first get the attachment fans? Seen youtube vids - but want open up as last resort
Btw - i belive the ps3 is basically a computer ? -so how come a laptop can get heated up to the max (in fact a lot hooter than a ps3) and not switch off ?

For the later question: A laptop is cooled better (but I managed to get my laptop to crash with bluescreen a few times easily) and the laptop has an external PSU, so one less internal heat source. Also I really don't know what the engineers at Sony were thinking when placing the fan directly against the housing.
I am pretty sure cooling won't do it for you and you need a reflow. There are some good guides on youtube, search for Gilsky and watch all his videos, including the one about refluxing. Don't use cheap heat paste, get Arctic Silver. I personally have had good results by drilling in some holes into the casing over the fan (actually I used a soldering iron and cut out a large piece of plastic from the case). And if you add some extra fans, make sure they show in the right direction so you don't push in warm air.
I have some good experience with these notebook coolers you can get on ebay for cheap, took two of them apart, the system is up and running for close to four months by now (ylod system with atleast two repair attempts), on July 30th I promised some pictures when it would survive three months here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-153...o_start-904937/
Way over that limit by now, here are the photos:

(Sorry for the quality of the pictures, they were shot with my mobile).

Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

The PS3 does not have a fan...it has a blower. This is why it is placed against the housing...it feeds from the top side, not the side against the housing. The cooling hardware is more than enough if nothing is damaged and your thermal compound is in good shape...it is the firmware that slows the fan and allows for excessive heat that is the main cause of the problem.

You can build a fan controller to fix this using the instructions form the first link, or you can buy from the second or third link:

Got a friend to open it up -right feckin pain in the arse it was!
Dust inside wasn't excessive and friend then applied thermal paste and so far in those 2 weeks it has been fine and the heat from vents is not as strong
So far so good = but me have little faith in Sony products (my first Sony product was a TV that died after 1day!)

Sony once was quality stuff, but for the last 10 years or so Sony products have stopped being as reliable than they used to be. I made this experience with my first PSP, imported from Japan before they even were released over here, the laser died before I even played a single game.

Very true...I remember a time when Sony TVs hardly ever started on fire...seems like a million years ago.

Lol well your ps3 looks like a abomination . All that to keep it cool. I understand were your coming from with Sony once having a goodwill with its name and all. While i was growing up Nokia was purchased by everyone i knew because of its goodwill (name and quality)

Yea, and then they closed down the German factory and moved to Romania.

And they continue to ignore Android...they say it is because people like it too much...or rather, because it is too popular (because people like it).

Well in this case you have to fix the problem, not apply a cure.

Vacuum your room more, give the ps3 more space, every now and again use the narrow nozzle your get with vacuum and suck out some dust through the ps3 vents.

IF you do not try to get get rid of the dust before it gets into your ps3, this will keep happening.

Regarding the cooling fans - i like this as simplest option - but why is it i always hear that they don't work , or they cause damage? ( true or scare stories ?)
The cooling fan pics - how many fans are there running as seem to be side and base ? - and (sorry for being a doze)is bottom pic of fans inside the ps3 ?

2x3 USB notebook cooling fans out of one of these:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/stylish-tr...d-13227?item=32
You can normally get them for cheap at ebay.
The upper part of the 4th picture shows the blower (I just realized it's one of these 19-blade models, not one of the newer chinese 15-blades), the lower part shows the 2nd 3 notebook coolers, they are attached to the housing, so not inside.
I once had additional cooling fans for my Xbox 360, but removed them pretty fast, they are placed over the standard fans and cause problems with the air flow, sometimes they even prevent the air from getting pushed out, so it's not all a scare story.
