Hello all,
I thought I would post this here because of all the great tips and support I seen from the members here.
So here's my problem:
I have a PS3 that was bought in May 2008, Last week I got the RLOD (YLOD). This is what the PS3 displayed when turning it on:
Green Light comes on...
Blue light comes on for about 1/2 a second...
Blue Light goes out, Green one goes to Yellow Steady for 1/2 a second....
Yellow goes to Red, followed by Beep, Beep, Beep. then the Red light stays on flashing.
What I have attempted to correct this:
-Re-Seat the hard drive
-Disassembled and thoroughly cleaned out fans, components and other areas that were dusty, Also used mid PSI Compressed Air to clean hard to reach areas
-Checked all cords and plugs
-Inspected the PSU, all was good
-Changed Thermal Paste using brand that is available in my area: CoolerMaster High Performance.
This has not corrected the issue.
Any ideas? Even if it buys me 4-5 hours to backup my hard drive

I have also adjusted the metal plates to apply a little more pressure to the chips to the heat sink

Just do a reflow/reflux and you are good to go.

Good reflow guide (watch all videos, not only the first part), just before you heat the chips up, use some no-clean flux fluid. The no-clean part is important, otherwise it might corrode your mainboard. Also try to get your hands on some Arctic Silver termal component.
And you might want to put some rubber/silicone under the PSU and the bluray drive so they no longer have direct contact to the mainboard. It makes the heat float a little better.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

Thanks for the tip... would you recommend trying a reflow first, or just go straight to reflux then reflow?

Refluxing is just to use the flux fluid. I would recommend doing both at the same time.

The flux is just to help the solder flow and stick to the components but solder already has a bit of flux in it. I just reflowed mine (without flux) and it worked 1st time. If it didn't work, then i'd have used a bit of flux just before I put the heat on it. Good luck!

Yes, the solder already has flux in it, but when reflowing it, you burn away some of the flux.

I thank everyone for their responses. I'm holding off at the immediate moment on repairing it while I await a response from Sony Canada and PlayStation in response to my email (which contains a few threats to use the media so soon since the recent Data breech)
I have asked for this email to be sent to the highest person in charge of Customer Relations, so we will see what happens.... I mean my system is barely a year out of warranty (Extended at that) and they want close to 200.00 to fix this? and from what you are all saying, it should only cost 40.00.

Good luck with that but i suspect you'll end up fixing it yourself. These big Co's just sh*t on customers. You'll get a lot more help here than any big Co. like Fony :)
