You are welcome Craig !! -- i found that those reviews are very unbiased and a great source of knowledge -- for some reason they also confirm the superiority of Ahead Nero Technology over all others. !! Now that should make your day !! Ha ha ha !!
Regards !

Mlr-
I have the pioneer dvr-108
I am using Nero 6 Ultra version 6.3.1.20
I also have the latest firmware.
I'm having the same issue you had. I have 8x blanks (matrix). Nero shows my drive and I have the drop down menu that I can select the speed. As soon as I put a blank into the drive it moves to 4x and greys it out. I have no control over the speed selection.
The first dvd I burned I didn't have this problem burning at 8x. Now all of a sudden it doesn't want to work.
That's why I had said I was having the same issue you were having. I was wondering what you had figured out to get your drive burning at the correct speed.

all it is is a disc issue you need to shop around for good discs i was using bulpaq orange 8x and these would only write at 4x i have now got (anv 8x) these do a good write although you dont save much on time from 4x to 8x i got a write time of 12 mins 30 secs with anv at 8x so there wasnt much difference from a 4x write only 1 min 30 or so there are better discs around which will write a disc in about 8 mins have a look on ere http://www.flashman.dsl.pipex.com/Pioneer_108.htm its been tested with a few different discs you just have to try some out let me know how you go as i would like to find a better disc my self hope this helps

I think I am going to try the ritek G05 discs
Actually the first disc I was able to burn I got a burn time around 7 1/2 mins. Hopefully the ritek will work.

There are 2 firmware upgrades as of 8-23-04 that should solve your problems.

So loki, any progress on testing media. I have the same problem as you....
I upgraded to the 110 firmware, I have the Ritek G05 8X disks...using Nero 6.3.something I can't select anything faster than 4X. I am going to try to remove my CD-rw drive and put the dvr-108 as the master. Right now I have the dvr as the slave, does anyone know if that could be causing a problem?
I am going to try removing the Nero dynamic speed setting in the registry, then try roxio 7 later today.

thanks for the info mlr. I will verify my Nero version and update if I need too. I did see some hacked firmware out there, but I thought that might be sketchy. Besides, pioneer is selling this product so it should work. I shouldn't have to rely on some guy reassembling the firmware to make their product work as advertised. I might try that though as a last resort. thanks again for the info.

I have to check my version later on tonight when I get home. Does anyone know what difference it makes to have the 108 set as a slave? I am wondering if the drive is detecting this and therefore not allowing Nero to record higher than 4X.

Ok well I had the 1.10 firmware. Discs were still not going past the 4x mark. Strange issue was that using Nero cd/dvd speed some of the discs did show up as 4x-12x...while others would only show 4x. I'm assuming a bad batch of blanks?
I haven't gotten my ritek G-05 blanks to test them out.
After reading some posts here I went and flashed the drive to the hacked 1.06 version.
ALL of my discs now load in Nero and allow me to burn at higher then 4x. Only issue I saw was that the burning speed at 12x was around 9 mins. (this is on the matrix 8x dvd-r)
Hopefully the ritek blanks will burn better.
Right now I am not really sold on this drive. My dvr-106 had been flashed and was burning 4x on 2x media. I didn't have a single coaster out of a 100pk of blanks.
Burn time was around 14-15 mins. I was hoping that this new drive would cut it in half at 8x :(

I updated to the latest Nero version (.20). I tried the Nero dynamic speed registry change, I tried changing the 108 as the master, I tried roxio, I verified the DMA setting. I tried everything except the disc so Im assuming it must be disks. I have 25 of the RitekG05. I thought these were suppossed to be really good disks. I have burned over 150 G04s in my A05 burner previously. I started going through the process of flashing my firmware and then I thought, why am I going through all this trouble for something to work like it should? I am going to let pioneer sort their crap out in the next firmware release. I have 30 days to return. If they don't implement the Ritek G05 by then, I will return this drive. I am spending more time trying to get the thing to record at 8X than the actual time I would be saving. I might try some prodisc blanks, but I am no longer in a rush to get this drive to burn higher than 4X.
