how can i write a 4.7 backup of a 6.85 movie?

i want to make backups that work on my stand alone player. The average movie that i'm backing up are 6.85 gigs or so where my dvd burner runs 4.7 gig disks. The problem is that when i use the vob to avi compressor the use my dvd writing software the movie goes back to normal size.(From 800meg to 6.85gig) there has to be a way to compress vob files, is'nt there? Please help if you can
