Whew...okay, I tried burning a DVD with the mmc.dll that I recieved from Craig. Here's the 411:

First off, it worked. I burned a SuSE 9.1 DVD using Windows and Nero. Couple of things though. At first, my DVD-writer was roaring like a beast. It was really unhappy about bieng forced to burn (from what it sounded like). Then, it calmed down, and started burning properly, however, every 500 MB or so (this is a 3.8 GB disk), the buffer would be reset. It would go down to 0, refill, and start burning where it left off. I think this is why this fix only works for 2 out of 3 people, the odd one out has a DVD burner without buffer underrun protection. It seems like this is what's going on. Having said that, I give many thanks to Craig and Ahead Technologies for developing this fix, and I'm looking forward to something even better than this because, while it works, I have a feeling that sooner or later it will fail.

My set-up:
-VIA USB 2.0 controller
-HP dvd420i DVD burner
-Bytecc ME-320 USB 2.0 external enclosure
-Windows XP Home edition SP2
-Nero 6.6.0.1 (with the mmc.dll fix)

Thanks everyone!

Hello Everyone,

Looks like the MMC.DLL file is working for more and more users. I'm getting more responses back with success that failures now, unlike before.

Just a note, I have not checked, but I believe this new MMC.DLL file is contained in the new Nero 6.6.0.3 build posted on the website. You may want to just upgrade to this and see if this also resolves your issue without needing to ask for the MMC.DLL file to be sent to you.

PS. I will be doing a lot of traveling for the rest of December, and first few weeks of January, so I will not be able to respond to a lot of emails. And from December 15th to December 27th, I will be completely out of touch as I am finally going on Vaction. But as soon as I return, I will try and catch up on all the issues.

Regards,

Hey, all. Some of you may have seen my posts earlier. Back on page 10 I told you that my burner was a store bought external unit and that I contacted the manufacturer (Mad Dog) for help. They replied very quickly by asking me for some info and telling me that when they got it back from me they'd send me an RMA so that I could send them my drive and they'd send a replacemnet. I told you all that I'd update you on whether or not the new drive worked as it looks like Mad Dog is using a different enclosure now than when I bought mine less than a month a go. Well, I gave Mad Dog all this week to reply with an RMA but I haven't heard anything. I sent them another email today telling my patience is wearing thin. Hopefully I'll hear back soon or else I'm calling and demanding immediate service. In the mean time, I'm having trouble restraining myself from ripping the darn enclosure open and just installing the drive internally or trying out another enclosure that a friend leant me. But that voids my warranty and then no help from Mad Dog. I may try the MMC.DLL file everyone's talking about or upgrade to the newest Nero (even though the version I'm using is what came with the drive) while I wait for the RMA but I still say that a "plug and play" store bought drive should work out of the box. I'll check back in if I do a get another drive, etc., etc., etc., blah, blah, blah...

"SCSI command aborted" is the new "PC Load Letter"

New MMC.DLL report:

In my case the new file has changed the error. With original MMC.dll I always got the scsi command error. With the new one the error is ALWAYS: invalid block address. This with different brand DVDS. I've tried to make a bigger cache ( 500 MB ). I was able to do 5 perfect simulations ( never happened before ) but when it came to actually burn.... INVALID BLOCK ADDRESS.....

I've found a temporary "solution": old mmc.dll - usb 2.0 disabled in MOBO bios ( only 1.1 ) - cache size augmented at 500 MB. So far so good...
It takes nearly half an hour for 1,5 Gb :(

With thennew Nero version .3 the error has switched to reset occurred - session fixation error...

for me it's a nogo. Back to my personal solution

Here is the response I got back from Pioneer Tech Support...

Thank you for contacting Pioneer Electronics, Inc.

If the drive is not burning at the maximum speed, the IDE Controller the drive is attached to may be set to PIO mode and needs to be set to DMA.

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1. Open Device Manager.

2. Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

? Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.

? Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

HI guys,

does anybody know what it is all about?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822603/en-us

I'm not able to install this since Windows says that "it's impossible to start program for Net.. " and to contact my hardware manufacturer...

I've tried unseccesfully to install manually the driver inside the patch package. I copied back my original files but now the DVD writer does not detect any disc inserted anymore...

Now I'm in deep trouble..
Pls help!

OK - I replaced my (Memorex) Pioneer 106D with a (Mad Dog) NEC 2500 in my enclosure and attempted to burn a DVD.

Guess what - it failed as usual!

I then installed the mmc.dll file and then tried to burn a disc using the NEC 2500 and TA-DA!!! It works now - EXCELLENT.

I was so excited by this I decided to take the enclosure to bits and re-install the Pioneer 106D - which I did - then tried to burn a DVD again and guess what? Yep - you are correct - it FAILED and no different to the original situation.

So I know have the NEC 2500 drive installed and I'm pretty happy really.

So - there must be something about the mmc.dll file that the NEC 2500 likes but the Pioneer 106D does not?

Any ideas on that one then?

My idea is that you got lucky.

I've a NEC 2510a in a Belkin USB2 enclosure and it does not work. I used to have a Sony DWU14 in the same enclosure and it worked with Easy CD and DVD creator.

I sure miss that Sony!!!

For those who still have "reset occured" while using the latest Nero version (6.6.0.3), try to deactivate the "burnproof protection" under the recorder tab. Seems to work for me.

I am using an LG4160B with Raidsonic (IcyBox) enclosure, running on a shuttle with nForce3 chipset.

*erratum*
I still have (but less) errors with only burnprrof desabled. I have to disable "DVD high compatibility" to make it work 100%. But lead-in and finalization are much shorter, I don't know if there is any issue there.

Hello everyone,

I purchased a liteon dvdRW SOHW-812S a month or two ago, and last week purchased a BYTECC ME-320 USB ONLY enclosure case, i am having the same issues as all of you are, now what is weird in my case is that i have random problems with it, let me explain.

first time i tried this enclosure to burn a CDR, works flawless, never had a issue at this point.

as soon as i go to burn a DVD it failed but wrote 25% of the DVDR.

went to burn the same crap again, failed and i think it coastered my DVDR (i forget).

now all i do is simulation burns, if its gonna fail, it will fail mostly at that part, once we get past the failed simulations we can work on getting this crappy thing to work.

at random times when i power off the unit and power it on, the first time i try to simluate the burn with a DVDiso, it simulates 100%, then next time it will fail right away with scsi command error, and at other times it will fail somewhere past 20%-50% of the way, this is even with the new Nero 6603.

anyways, i have a bunch of computer systems as i am a systems administrator, and a computer hardware/software technician, at the moment i am testing this out on a few machines.

each machine i am testing this on so far has either windows 2003 server, windows XP (sp1 or sp2), usb 1.0-2.0 (varies), and at most are default *just* installed recently their operating system.

the windows 2003 server is my main box, and seems to have ALL the issues above :(, i want this enclosure to work mainly because i go on the road and i take my mac laptop all over the place when i need to do work, which i havent tested this case on yet, that is the last thing on my mind at the moment since i want the enclosure unit to work universal without too many problems that i have to work around.

windows 2003 machine, had a Nero version below 6603 (had like 6.3 on there), and simulations failed for the most part, updated to 6603, still have issues, did ForceASPI, worked good for a few tests, then failed, if i power off the unit for awhile it seems to work, then just die out again, in some cases intermittently.

tried Alcohol 120%, it sucks, never worked at all for simulated USBDVD burns, gave me LBA errors (seems to give the simplest of error messages compared to Nero, its hard to say which one i would prefer, more or less)

DVDdecryptor seemed to be a good choice since it allowed me to choose internally which ASPIlayer i wanted to use, using microsoft STI or SPTI (whatever it is called), it gave me some errors saying something about timing/semaphore crap, retrying about 13 times finally resulted in a successful simulation, but a pain in the rear if you ask me :)

this computer has 6 usb 2.0 ports, and uses the NFORCE 2 chipset, 2500 barton, 512 mb ddr ram in dual ddr mode, but the USB driver is a openHCD.

next machine is a XP 1900+, using a ECS mainboard (a super cheap one), if i rem it has only usb 2, it failed without question, i also have a internal DVDRW in there (same DVDRW drive as the one i mentioned), the internal one worked fine, where as the external failed, brand new Nero installation (i think it is using 6603 - going to make sure of this in about 30 mins), oh i think the chipset is also VIA for this one, but dont quote me on this, the MB is k7s5a, but i cant look to see what chipset it has ATM, and im too lazy to google it :)

next machine is some crappy HP freebe that i got from a client, its a 800 mhz, using 128 mb ram, usb 1, and JUST installed windows XP with SP2, this one so far is working right out of the box, it uses a INTEL chipset (82801aa USB host controller)

very strange how so far the crappiest of the machines, seems the best so far!, i have 5 other machines i will be testing sometime hopefully within the next 10 hours.

either this is a software issue, hardware chipset/usb issue, timing issue, garbled data issue (related to USB 2), or something else, but it sure is a brain scratcher :)

the only two things that are closely related for most people is, usb 2, chipsets, enclosure case (chipset), and DVDRW drive (liteon SOHW-812S).

pulled one of my HD's from storage,
put in the server and removed the others,
wiped it clean, put XP on it, installed Nero 6603 demo, kept the USB to defaults (1.0-1.1 NOT 2.0), tested simulation of burning a DVD, works,

tried this on a few USB ports, all worked,

installed USB 2.0 driver for my NFORCE2 chipset,
did a simulation DVD burn, it failed as i expected, 20-27% of the way each time, changing some of the DVDburn options (smartburn, buffer free, etc) for my burner didnt help either, gave different error messages, etc.

the most i have been able to simulate is up to 42%, and that was once.

this was all done at 4x

now trying at 2x

failed at 37%....

argh
