having only usb 1, 1.1 is definately NOT a solution, it takes way too long to burn a dvd compared to a USB 2.0 header.

i think im going to try to take the drive bay back as it seems to only work with USB 1.0 properly :(

hopefully i can find one that is working the way it should

Hi all,
I've been following this thread for a couple of weeks now and my head is just overwhelm with the amount of informations and suggestions that everyone has provided.
Recently bought an Inspiron 8600, with an NEC 3500A with DL support in a Bytec enclosure. Enclosure only supported USB2 and so I borrowed a different enclosure at work and use Firewire instead. Works just fine, but I had to return it. So now I'm back to where I'm starting. Will try the mmc.dll file if someone would email it to me, thanks (chenk@cwu.edu). But the main reason I'm posting right now is to find out if anyone else has some other problems besides DVD-R.

Problems noticed:
-Won't recognize DVD-RW or +RW, but can erase them in Nero
-Won't recognize CDRW unless the session is closed and finalize.
-Firewire allowed DVD-R burns, but problems noticed still exist.

Let me know if you firewire and/or USB1/2 users experience that. Will update firmware, USB drivers, Nero, etc... as soon as holiday starts. Been too busy to mess around with all the suggestions. Thanks again all.

Ive been directed to this forum because I was on a quest to find a solution to my problem wich is the same as your's.

After trying multiple thing I found a solution for my computer.
Yet to see if it work with others.

Ive upgraded to Nero 6.6.0.3
Burning was still a no go till I uncheck the "DVD High compatibility mode".

To do so, you have to open the DVD RW drive properties window. Next to the scroll down menu where you choose your recording device, there's an icon of an optical drive. You click on it. It should open a dialog box with all your recording device properties. In the left bottom corner you'll have a "OPTIONS" icon. Open it, you'll have two options , one will be "DVD high compatibility mode" Uncheck it. And voila.

That did the trick forme.

Let me know if it work.

the "DVD high compatibility mode" never worked for me checked, i unchecked that before for testing before i took my unit back to the shop and got rid of it,

the only thing that DVD high compat mode did when i uncheck it was allowed not to always write at least 1 gig to the DVD, it was quicker at closing the session.

Well, i got DVD Decrypter working. I also got the latest Nero with the new mmc.dll, and it still doesnt work. I get a new error though...
"Power Calibration Error"

and not only does Nero still not work, but as before, it prevents ALL other programs, including DVD Decrypter, from working. I have to uninstall all of them and reinstall DVD Decrypter for it to work.

I share the frustration that many of you have by not being able to burn through USB2 port, I read bbmayo's enrty about using CopyToDVD software and have downloaded it, installed and burned one 4X DVD-R succesfully, while it was recording it indicated the recording instant speed varying from 2.82X to 3.88X
On the second DVD the speed dropped to 1.26X and lower until it looked like it lost communication to the drive, and it gave a write fail error. If the data does not flow continously to the burner it will fail, so the problem is most likely the USB2 bidirectional communication. ????????on how to solve it.

Wow...I am so glad to find this post after doing tons of searching on the internet. I am glad that I am really not going crazy afterall. I bought a NEC 16x dvd burner and an ADI usb external enclosure for it. I have a laptop which has usb 1.1 ports so I also had to get a usb 2.0 cardbus. I haven't been able to burn anything successfully using usb 2.0. I've seen so many posts with people having problems similar to mine. I hope this problem can be fixed without having to buy a desktop.

I'm not sure if this is the exact same problem, but ALL of my IDE devices (HD's & CD/DVD-drives!) were showing up as SCSI devices, according to "Device Manager". I had no problem with reading from my CD/DVD burner, but burning was a no-go, both with CD-r's and DVD+/-r's. I believe that some of us on this thread had the same problems.

I recently solved my problems by installing the latest nVidia nForce2 driver set available from the mobo manufacturer. I had noticed that there was a version released several months after I had bought my mobo, so I knew that my drivers were old.

FYI, my system:

Aopen AK79D-400-MAX
AMD Barton 2500+
Windows XP SP2
Optorite 12X (don't remember the exact model)
etc, etc,......

I have been lurking on this thread since about page 2 or 3, and I must say "Thanks" to all who have contributed since I believe that I got a handle on what exactly was going on through the information posted here.

I would also like to say that AHEAD/NERO shows a lot of class in allowing one of their employees to spend company time in this thread while attempting to solve a problem that probably isn't NERO's problem at all. Especially since most of us probably didn't pay for the program because it came included with our burners.

Lastly, the above solution will most likely apply to those of us with nForce2 mobo's. Those with other chipsets will best be advised to check out their appropriate manufacturer website. Or, if that doesn't work, maybe check out the chipset manufacturer's website for updated drivers.

Hopefully this post will help you to solve your problems. Good luck to all!

@ michiaki

Basically, I downloaded the latest version of the motherboard driver disk (the one that comes with every new motherboard), so I either updated all the motherboard device drivers, or at least verified that the driver(s) were up-to-date. That would include the integrated USB controller on the motherboard, as well as integrated sound card, ethernet, etc....

As for the question about the manufacturer, it's just simply the company who made your motherboard. If you have a Dell, HP, Compaq, E-machines computer, then you may have a little bit of detective work in trying to figure out who supplied the motherboard. Or you can go directly to Dell, HP, Compaq, etc... and try to find updated integrated motherboard device drivers on their website.

Another alternative is to find out who supplied the USB controller chips. In my case, it was VIA. FYI, you cannot download the latest USB drivers from VIA due to some sort of legal-type agreement with Microsoft where the drivers are included with the OS. But be aware that MS apparently is not supplying the latest VIA drivers. If I recall correctly, the latest VIA USB drivers are version 2.57. I believe that you are getting version 2.56 with windows. But you should be able to easily find version 2.57 from various motherboard manufacturer driver support sites.

Who supplied the USB controller chip on your mobo? You will need to find that out yourself. But do try to locate an updated mobo driver file from your motherboard manufacturer as that may take care of your problem and preclude you from having to find out the obscure details.

As for finding out which driver versions you have, you can possibly figure that out through "device manager". Then again, if you just grab the latest mobo driver set from whoever made your mobo, then you would be assured that you have the latest drivers.

I hope that helps.

Solution! for me at least...
and this is not a work-around...it was an actual solution to what was causing these problems...

i got all the errors people have been talking about on this forum, "SCSI command aborted" in Nero, write errors in DVD Decrypter, and it appeared at first to be the drive....anyway..

I tested the Drive on another PC, with no burning softwate previously installed....
and it ran fine, no errors, with DVD Decrypter....

So i began to search.....Windows, System, System32... too see if there were any drivers that i had that were screwing things up...

allthough i didnt think much would turn up, i searched for "aspi"..
i found a couple normal windows drivers, but i also found a "Gear Security" driver....called GEARaspi.sys or something like that....

well I knew this wasnt being used in any program i had, so i renamed it (rather than delete it....)
and VIOLA..!!!
no more problems....

ive sucessfully burned 10-15 DVDs, no problems...

Im thinking and hoping this will work for others since most have come to the conclusion that this is def a software problem....

there were a few kinks when i was erasing RWs, but i think that had more to do with DVD decrypter

either way, burning straight DVDs works fine now

I hope this works for others, let me know if it does.. or if you encounter any other drivers that are doing the same crap that the 'Gear' one was...

I can see that you found a solution to your problem and that's great.

The question is - why did changing to the new mmc.dll file help some of us and not others?

i.e. It works for my NEC 2500 but not the Pioneer 106D

I'll check if I have that gear file that you mention on my notebook then :)

My own feeling is that the USB 2.0 to IDE conversion is messed up. I don't actually think ASPI or Nero etc is to blame.

Had problems with the usb enclosure so I got a firewire enclosure. It burns fine but sometimes the drive will disappear from my list of devices. Event Viewer complains about sb2port. Anyone have a similar experience?

I have had this problem with USB for a long time now. I gave up, and bought a new enclosure with both Firewire and USB. Just wanted to confirm that Firewire works without problems.

Hi all.

Like many in this thread i got the same annoying message.
I have an external case with a 5631 Ali chipset and a Pioneer DVR-105.

I can say that this is a software problem: I have a dual boot machine WinXP/Fedora Core 3.

Now, with Window$ I have that error and with Fedora Core 3 I have not. I repeat K3b burning software is a rock with my usb2 drive!

Linux kernel treat usb2 drives, pendrives and all the rest (including ide disks and cd-roms) like scsi devices: there is a scsi emulation layer between burning software and usb2 units. Window$ does the same thing... At least it tries...

Well, we have to know now what causes the problem: since many burnign apps fail, it's not their fault. The root of the problem is (too often) in Window$ scsi emulation layer or in usb2 drivers.

I have not tech background to solve this issue. I suggest to try a recent Linux distro (Fedora Core 3, Mandrake 10.1, ...), and do some simulation with iso images... You can so prove that your hardware is ok.

The matrix is a system Neo,
that system is our enemy.

Yup it is definitely software in my situation - changing the mmc.dll file sorted it out for one of my drives at least.

I was originally looking for updated USB 2.0 drivers for my notebook but all other USB 2.0 devices work perfectly.

I'm concerned that if I ever update Nero I'll never be able to burn disks again...

So are we all using external enclsoures? Has anyone tried getting an actual external burner?

I've already tried usb 2.0 and firewire...both failed for me. I'm about to just buy back a usb enclosure and plug it in usb 1.1 so I can at least burn dvds while I'm asleep.

I think retail external writers are using the same kind of chipsets used in the enclosures you can buy seperately. But maybe it´s worth a shot, I dunno.

The problem may be because the USB communication is not fast enough - the data is not going through DMA.
The reason I say this is because I removed the DVD burner from USB2 enclosure and installed it in my desktop, there it took Nero 45 minutes to burn an 8X DVD, the used buffer read level was jumping up and down from 20% to 99%,(just like it jumped on the laptop and USB2 enclosure) on a good fast burn it should stay close to 100%. I downloaded Nero's Info tool and that showed my hard drive where I had files I was burning was NOT IN DMA, after I went in CMOS and had hard drive selected and DMA I was able to burn full speed on desktop computer and burner on IDE cable.

Now if there could only be a way to test/check the USB2 port and see if it is set up to communincate with the motherboard through DMA then our problems may be over. Nero's free Info tool helped some but I do not know how the USB2 port gets set up in our laptops? The saga continues.....
