I was wondering if I should just buy an external burner, but not anymore. Thanks for the info.

i have this problem too with my real external burner, a btc ui1108.
that's also why i believe that the power source isn't the problem, becouse otherwise alle btc external burners should have the same poblem, wich doesn't happend with linux and in my case with dvd+r.

i can burn +r(w) but can't burn -r

Same problem
Pioneer DVR-108.
Comes with Nero OEM, 6.3.1.25
You would think that if it shipped with the drive it should work. I would.

Therefore, the logical train of thought here is that if it works internally, on the IDE chain (it does), then the USB 2.0 connection is the problem.

It is.

I updated as much as possible. Windowsupdate. Bios. USB 2.0 drivers (none at my mobo manufacturer ASROCK - relegated to using the Windows one).

The external case I was using was a no-name brand I picked up at a local computer parts supplier. Constar ST-2512C. Says it should work with USB 2.0 connections. But one thing in particular led me to believe that it was the external case that was the problem.

When rebooting the computer (a 2.4GHz Celeron on an ASROCK PRO+ mobo), after the BIOS detected all the IDE drives it would stall right then and there. Powering down this external Constar case with the Pioneer DVR-108 in it, allowed the computer to normally boot up.

Luckily I had another external case handy. An ADS technologies (http://www.adstech.com) USB 2.0 Drive kit. It was housing an external hard drive for me. I threw the drive out, put my Pioneer DVR-108 into it. Reinstalled Nero and rebooted. No hang on bootup! Tried a burn to DVD-RW. No SCSI error! Woohoo!

Luke

For anyone that used my solution and removed the GEAR aspi file, i read the previous post about another error occuring afterwards. Im not sure exactly how to solve it, but I havnt tried using Nero on my laptop after removing the aspi file. Before i found the solution, i could almost get some programs to work, however, upon installing ANY version of Nero, NOTHING including Nero itself, worked, AT ALL. Im not still sure why, and im almost afriad to try installing it again.

As for solving the problem, id say, maybe try a new program? I know thats not an option for some.

Also, i updated the firmware on my External Drive (yes its an external, not an enclosure), so maybe doing that will help you also.

Hope this helps..

Hello bigdandcw, and others, I have tried and removed the GEAR aspi file and then Nero would not work, and tryed different software also too. I still think that this is a data throughput issue, others using firewire report no problems, so it must be the USB2 to DMA where the data gets bottlenecked. I had no problems burning at 1X speed, but when I tried 4X it failed. At 4X the burner needs to see data constantly at 4.5MB/sec, at (8X it needs 11MB/sec) so if the USB2 port is not connected to DMA the data throughput drops to 1M/sec or less, so the burning fails. I saw this happen when I did not have my hard drive enabled as DMA, (where the files I was burning resided). So therefore I think everyone could burn at 1X speed with no problems, but who wants to wait 1 hour. Until we figure out how to make sure the USB2 is connected to DMA, then we should be able to burn 8X or faster.

Here's a solution that worked on my Dell Inspiron 2600 laptop (which is connected to an external DVD burner by a USB 2.0 Cardbus card).

Follow the link to this website, where someone describes the problem and offers a link to a patch (from Dell, but may work on other brands also...).

http://www.scottlandon.hawking.secure-xp.net/o2micro/index.htm

I know that this patch worked PERFECTLY for my computer, and hope it will be of some help to you all.

Scsi command and resultant drink coaster problem was solved on my computer after 2 weeks of extensive testing by stopping
Ulead Burning Helper (c:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD\ULCDRSvr.exe)
You will only have this if you have some of the ULEAD programs on your computer.

Use the Services control panel in windows to do this

I have burned 2 DVD at 8x and 12x with no problems
Maybe this will work for you too

Good Luck

I have 2 extarnal burners in a sweex external case on USB2, 1 Lite-on SOHW-1653S and a Plextor PX-708A and 1 internal in my laptop (HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N) and I only have SCSI command aborted error only in my new drive (Lite-on) I only use good media, so thats not the problem. Sometimes it writes some good DVDs until I get the message: Illegal disc, and the next dvd's are always scsi command aborted. (Always in the lead in) I already tried everything on this page. Any more sugestions?

I have the Nexstar 2 USB enclosure and two DVD burners. At first I tried the Pioneer DVR-108 in the enclosure and I too got the SCSI command error. After a few days I decided to try my LG GSA-4040B in the same enclosure and on the same computer and it worked flawlessly. So i'm thinking like some said that this may be an issue with some Pioneer drives.

This may not help anyone, but I was also getting the "SCSI command aborted" error, which was followed by the old "Unsafe removal of device" (the DVD/CD writer getting disconnected).. (LG GSA-4120B on secondary IDE)
Spent 2 days trying to figure out the problem. and then suddenly I realized after one of many reboots that the writer was not set as master.. changed the pin at the back to master and now it's fine..
Really kicked myself after that, can't believe I forgot to set it.. anyway, just reminding you that this may be your problem ^^

Hi All,

As most of the people in this thread, I have the magic and annoying "SCSI command aborted" just after I click on burn.
I have already wasted over 20 DVD+R on Nero 6.6.0.1 and more recently wasted 6 DVD+R with Nero 6.6.0.3 (later version seems to be worst for me).

I use win2k SP4 latest patches available.
All my drivers are at the lastest version available.
I have an AMD 2500 with 512MB.

Brand new Plextor PX712A firmware 1.2 in an USB2 external ThunderX case.

Here is the funny part:
When I use the Memorex DVD+RW 4x, I have encountered 1 SCSI command aborted over 40 tests.
When I use DVD+R Ridata 8X or Velocity 8x, the SCSI command aborted is sporatic and comes very often.
All the testing was done at 4x (just a few at 2.4x or 8x).

Note that I have successfully burnt 40 DVD+R with those but wasted a lot too.

Since 6.6.0.3, I haven't been able to burn a single DVD+R. 6 attempts = 6 coasters.
Nero brings up a new window which show you the Buffer being used. Then a few seconds later (not even 1% burnt), the SCSI aborted command appears.

- I have installed Sonic RecordNow for a temporarely use... kinda same behavior

- I have reduce the write speed but this factor doesn't matter as per my testing.

So I'm stuck with this and don't want to risk other coasters unless somebody can provide a good suggestion to try out.

I read that a potential power issue could be the cause of it... hmm, it is very bizarre that saw many people with different external(or internal) drives would experience the same issue. Especially knowing that several brands are impacted.

I have 6 or 7 log files that I saved.
Not sure if Craig needs any more data as he was able to reproduce and many logs were already sent to him.

This issue was raised several months ago and as far as I know, no one was able to identity a common factor or root cause. It is mostly speculations...

Craig,
Were there any good information and a common denominator in the log files sent to you?
Or the logs don't show anything suspicious?

THANKS in advance for any help that you guys may provide.

Cheers,
desof

I do not think that unsufficient power is the problem. I have tried testing my enclosure drawing power from an extra PC powersupply and still getting the excact same problem.

I believe this is some sort of problem with the USB drivers within windows, since the problem does not seem to appear with the same enclosure and computer, if using linux or in my case, FreeBSD.

But I want to use Windows, so I bought a Firewire enclosure instead, which solve the problem for me.

Just to emphasize one point:
Problem always appears in the lead in process.
What is done during that process to get this SCSI command aborted?
Maybe there's a way to improve the reliability in this area?

If I pass that Lead in stage, DVD is successful!

Does that give a hint?

Ha Ha, interesting suggestion Nklz.

I have installed the DVD writer as master in the PC tower and my first 4 DVD+R burnt successfully...
so far so good, special Thanks to nklz ...

Craig,
it seems that the USB connectivity (could be driver, cable, Thunder-X case) may be the root cause of the SCSI command aborted.

In the scenarios that fail for most of the people, are you guys all using External case with USB2?

Cheers,

I checked and I don't have any ASPI layer installed as it is IDE drive (or USB2 drive when used externally).

I do believe there's an existing issue with USB connectivity.
I have currently tested 12 times with a successful result.
Absolutely nothing was changed software wise on my machine to make it work.
Once again, I have simply inserted the drive in the PC tower on Primary IDE port.
USB is not involved at all.
