I upgraded to 6.6.0.5, and still had the same problem. I decided to try that Dell patch that someone posted and it worked!

just FYI for everyone pulling their hair out regarding this error...

I have tried just about everything, the only thing I found to fix the issue is to abandon usb2.0 for optical drives...I use firewire for my external dvd burner ( I have a laptop ) and it works flawlessly always.

when mucking around with my setup in devise manager; basicly all i was doing was enableing and disableing different usb devises. when i disabled my usb2 root hub my writer disapeared from my available drives window in Alcohol 120 which was running at the time. my usb2 enhanced host controller is described as a seperate entity. but i thought that my writer was suposed to operate with the usb2 enhanced host controller. so it looks like my writer is running under the wrong usb2 contoller. does this sound like it could be the cause of my problem? can any one advise on how to change the configuration so my writer is under the control of the right driver!! hope this doesn't sound like utter shite

Been awhile since I last posted. Been following everyone suggestion. Used last weekend as a test session.
I have my rig dual booted. One portion is all updated, second partion has a image of XP when first installed (XP with sp1) This image was from a time when I was able to burn dvd-r. Let me state here that after having these problems I tried and was successful burning dvd+r/rw every time. I started receiving the scsi command aborted messages about the time I upgraded to sp2 and did a firmware update on my lite-on 812s. Went back to the sp1 partition and found that I still was having errors. Not every burn simulation failed, but it was still failing more time than not. So I was convinced that SP2 may not be the issue. Since I don't have the original firmware version for the dvd burner, I could not fail back on that. I then look at what was happening when I was succeeding during the dvd-r simulations. I had some success when I disable the onboard NIC during the burn. This started me looking at the pci bus activity. A second issue I was having was that when I plug my portable usb2 notebook drive(draws power from the usb, no external power) it causes my external usb2 hard drive and dvd burner to loose all power/connection. This lead me back to some of the threads about not enough power being supplied by the usb2 bus. Using the usb2 notebook drive on a usb1.1 port work flawlessly. Question to the community...does usb1.1 supply more continues power than usb2. Now I have the knowledge that usb2 maybe lacking in power and possible issue with pci bus(note: usb is process on the pci bus). I then started removing all devices from my usb chain one by one.
1.usb hard drive
2.usb web cam
3.usb card reader
4.usb mouse
5.usb 56k modem
It was not until I removed the modem and tested that I was able to burn dvd-r without an error.
I repeated the burn similation 10 time on both the xp sp2 and xp sp1. All burns simulation were successful.
test burn dvd-r and tested read dvd with dvdinfo successful. This has seem to work for me now. So to all you out there having problem, I would look at newly installed devices that may or may not be draw its power from the usb bus.
Look forward to hearing about your success or failures.
PS
One note....All the testing was successful, however, I did notice that the dvd-r I burn started to stuttered then freeze trying to play the outer sectors of the dvd in my stand alone dvd player. DVDs and CDs read from the inside out if you didn't already know. I'm not sure if this is still an issue with the bus or the result from the updated firmware.

It's been probably more than a month since I've even looked at this thread let alone posted here. If you really care you can look back to page 10 or so and see some of my posts. I'm pretty much fixed now though I didn't really get a solution. I had a store bought Mad Dog external usb 2.0 16x blah, blah, blah. I think it's actually a NEC 3500 in there. I had noticed that the picture of the drive on the box that CompUSA was selling in December was different that the picture on my box I bought in November. They had a different enclosure with the newer drives. After not getting anywhere with the SCSI command aborted problem I wrote the company b/c they have a 2 year warranty (I guess that was part of my reasoning for buying one versus building one). After a little hassle I sent mine back and got a replacement from them with yet a 3rd enclosure. The picture on my box and my original enclosure were silver with a red logo on the top. My replacement is the same enclosure with a silver logo on top. The one they are actually selling now is a totally different silver enclosure with black rubber feet that can be seen from the sides. All very interesting stuff with these enclosures considering how some theorized that the enclosure chipsets or power supplies could be the cause. Anyway, my new drive works for the most part. I'm burning Sony 4x DVD-Rs at 4x with few problems. The only time I have a problem is when I don't defragment the partition I use for DVD files after every couple of discs I burn and then erase. So as long as I defragment and reboot (just for good measure) I'm up and running. Oh and I've been using the OEM Nero 6.3 that came with the drive. I'm washing my hadns of this problem and with luck you'll never see me in this thread again.

I burned many DVD's successfully with the Sony DRU-500 burner, using DVD Shrink & Decrypter. I have a 3.06G P4 with 1G RAM.

My problems started after I downloaded Windows Service Pack 2. Now I get DVD burn aborted, DVD burn unsuccessful, and the latest, "Device Error Sense Code 30C08 DVD Error 199688"

The only difference is the failure began after installation of Service Pack 2. Could this be the trouble for most of those here?

Best wishes--Tube Tyke

I doubt it. I have had this problem long before SP2 came out. The problem even exist on Windows 2000.

I had this problem a couple of months ago with an NEC 2500a in a USB 2.0 enclosure. Everything had worked flawlessly for nearly a year. Cause of the error, the external enclosure. Replacing the enclosure solved the problem. I had changed cables and just about everything else before replacing the enclosure. I put a HD in the same enclosure and got the same kinds of errors, so it was definitely the enclosure for me.

Which pci via latency patch are you talking about kevwolf69? I have the same problem burning dvd-s and I have SP1. Send me the patch to jfarner@online.no or tell me where to get it and I'll try it out.

have a look at this story from tecchanel http://www.tecchannel.de/hardware/817/6.html it refers to instability issues with pci via technologies chipsets it describes problems transfering large amounts of data eg. trying to burn to an external source. in some chip sets hangs and chrashes occur. there are 2 patches detailed. the first is from a guy called george breese (unofficial) the second is an official patch from via. the links in the report may be dead but it should give u some ammo when searching in google. google is where i first came across this latency problem. good luck. let us know if u find any thing

Arrrrrg. Problem reappeared after installing DVD Shrink. I normally use Nero recorde. Wanted to try the sister product again because I couldn't shrink LOTR enough. Burn on dvd -r tested with one bad read block. Tried Nero recorde again with dvd-r scsi command abort error. Still able to burn dvd +r/rw with out any problems or errors. Must be something up with the differences between dvd -r and dvd +r and the way the beginning of the disk.

My NEC 2500a did the same thing. It would burn +R but not -R. After a while it also had trouble with +R but not +RW. I changed the external USB2 enclosure and it burns everything. Must have had something to do with the chipset in the enclosure.

My problems originally started with DVD Shrink and now have spread to Nero. I do not think I can burn any kind of DVD right now--I am using only DVD-R media.

Most recently, I tried to burn a three and a half- minute movie from MiniDV to DVD-R. After nearly half an hour of encoding, I got the "Device Error 30C08 DVD Error 199688"

I am also unable to copy any DVD's with Nero. Maybe it wasn't SP2, maybe the problem lies with DVD Shrink.

Any guesses out there?

Many thanx--tubetyke

It can't be DVDshrink. I use it all the time and only one of my 2 external writers has the SCSI command aborted error. I rip my DVD's with DVD Shrink and burn them seperatly with Nero.

dimi2004--I was using DVD Shrink just fine too, for about 10 DVD's that went fine-- when all of a sudden I started having these problems.

I notice Sony (I have a DRU-500A burner with Nero software) has an update on its site that is supposed to fix my particular error message (Device Error Sense Code 30C08 DVD Error 199688) I have downloaded the patch/update, but have not installed it for fear of complicating the issue.

It is hard to remember if my problems started right after SP2, or right after I downloaded the latest version of DVD Shrink. They came in close proximity to one another.

But what is really puzzling is my inability to copy or to burn any kind of DVD now. HELP!!!!

Thanks so much for your input and to all the others in the search for the cause.

Best wishes to everyone---tubetyke

Has everyone tried unchecking the "DVD High Compatability Mode" as suggested by Craig at Nero?

For several days, I kept getting the same error message everyone on this thread has been receiving. I unchecked the "DVD High Compatibility Mode" box (under "Recorder", "Choose Recorder", "Options", then "OK"), and now I am able to burn with no problems at 8X.

I have a NEC DVD RW ND-3520A in a Bytecc enclosure (ME-320 Series) using USB 2.0. Win XP (with no SPs) with Nero 6.6.0.6 Upgrade. I was able to burn on my old computer using USB 1.1, so I also suspected the USB 2.0 drive.

Now that I have unchecked "DVD High Compatibility Mode", my DVD burner is working smoothly.

To confirm that the DVD High Compatability Mode was the underlying issue, I activated (re-checked) the mode, tried to burn, and received the error message. Uncheck the mode and my burner works again.

Newland: A couple of things--you are not using any of the major Windows updates (good fellow!) and it sounds as if you have an external DVD burner, as well as the older USB 1.

Many of us with newer computers are having issues with burners that have worked all along with software that was fine. We don't know where the problem lies.

I changed two things fairly close together. SP2 was the first and I updated Nero's software. Not sure if either or both caused the burner to start to err.

However, I will try your fix and get back to you in about a week (I have a trip).

Thanks for your input and for all others who have weighed in on this vexing matter.

Just to add to the mystery of this problem:

I had actually given up, and bought a Firewire/USB combo enclosure. USB was giving me the SCSI command aborted as usual, Firewire was working great. Then I did a reinstall of Windows XP (SP2 embedded) and had to use the USB connection to the drive, in order to boot from it (Firewire doesnt seem to be bootable?). Well, I left the USB wire connected and have started burning from it, simply because I did not remember I switched it. Sofar I have burned around 30 dvd-rs with no error. Go figure.

I have absolutely NO idea why it is working all of a sudden, and I´m just waiting for it to fail, but sofar it hasn´t. I am using the same programs and devices as before, so I´m puzzled. I´m beginning to think there is a little man living inside the enclosure, who lives only to fuck with my head by sometimes having the enclosure work and sometimes not ;-)

Just to clarify. I have new Dell Dimension 4700C (Win XP Pro with No SPs) with USB 2.0. I am using the most up-to-date hardware. I received the same error message as displayed by other users on this thread verbatim. I unchecked the DVD High Compatibility Mode and now my burner works just fine at 8X. If you have tried this and your burner still does not work, I apologize for wasting your time.

I also tested my burner on my old computer (Win XP Pro with no SPs) with USB 1.1. I was able to burn at 8X. I initally assumed a problem with USB 2.0 as the burner worked just fine on USB 1.1. The software on both computers are the same.

To double check that the DVD High Compatibility Mode was the issue for me, I re-checked this function and tried to burn, but then I received the error message. I unchecked the Mode, and my burner works.

on usb2 it says the speed is 8x, but actually it's much slower, you can look at the time it takes to verify this.

Where's Craig? I hope Ahead hasn't abandoned this issue (although I am quite thankful they're looking into the issue). He mentioned in a December post that he'd be away on vacation and business through early January.

I just recently developed the problem that you all have developed.

Had an Internal Lite-On 811S in a Bytecc enclosure attached to my laptop by USB 2.0 cable. Burned flawlessly (with no coasters) on CDs and DVDs for months. Late in December started slowing down to where a DVD back-up took, literally, all night. Figured the burner had it, so I bought the Sony dru-710 internal drive, swapped it for the Lite-on in the enclosure and got nothing but coasters. It would start the burning process, the counter would begin to time but no burning would take place. Got nothing except the 5mm ring on the outside.

Although the IDE Controllers indicated Ultra DMA and DMA, I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers without any change in success. Installed latest firmware to drive without success as well.

Called Sony and was told that due to the complexity of today's burners, you can't use an internal with an external enclosure. (They may be somewhat correct based on this thread, but not because of the complexity of the drive, but because of the failure of these software/harware companies to play nicely with each other.)

IN any event, I took their advice and purchased an external Mad Dog MegaSTOR 7 in 1 as some other unfortunate individual in this thread had done. Again, no success. Nothng but coasters.

THis thread has been going on since August and we still do not have even a final answer as to what the problem is, let alone what the ultimate fix. Most of the fixes mentioned avoid the issue as opposed to fixing the issue.

So, I turn to you, Craig and Ahead, and plead for your assistance in resolving this issue as soon as possible.

Please!

Hi Everyone,

I am back from my vacation, but have not made any further contributions to this thread as I have nothing contructive to say.

I will say that anyone telling you not to make an Internal Recorder into an External is blowing smoke. The Recorder MFG's can not afford to have one assembly line just for Externals, and another just for Internals. I know this from my days at Yamaha when I was on the Hardware end of things.

As for this issue, we can not find a solution through our software, as all the testing on our end and what we have seen on this and other forums continues to point to hardware issues. The 'Patch' we provided was just a patch, and not a fix. :-(
And it only works for 50% of the users. Disableling 'DVD High Compatibility Mode' works for another 10% of the users.

And then you have a long list of other solutions users have found such as
1) Removing other USB Devices
2) Updating drivers for USB Controllers
3) Using a different USB External Chassis
4) Using a FireWire External Chassis
5) Removing drive from External Chassis and making into an Internal for a DeskTop computer
6) Reinstalling Windows XP and SP2 (Clean install)
etc....

As you can see, nothing definately points to software. But then again, nothing points directly at any one Hardware aspect. Is it the Chip used on the External Chassis, is it the firmware on the recorders, is it the USB Controller and/or their drivers????

We continue to montitor this forum thread and others similar to it in the hopes someone stumbles onto something that gives us a breakthrough. But so far we are just as 'frustrated' as everyone else. :-(

But we will not give up. We hope to eventually find the cause and solution.

Regards,

Craig

I am really unsophisticated about this stuff. But based on one of the earlier threads, I used Nero InfoTool to check on my dvd drive information. At the risk of sounding completely ignorant, I provide the following info (and questions). Perhaps this info is the reason I am having the External Burner problem.

It showed the following which seemed strange to me...

Under ASPI, infotools showed two: the listed one was System ASPI and the information was that it was not installed, and Nero ASPI which is apparantly installed and working properly. Should System ASPI not be installed? If it should be, how do I go about installing it?

Under Configurations, my external burner, instead of being affiliated with the Primary and Secondary IDE Channels, is affiliated with "ALi PCI to USB Open Host Controller." Does this make sense? Under the Device Manager, there is no "transfer mode" to set to DMA. Could this be the problem?
