I wanted to backup a dvd with Nero Recode 2 and then burn it onto another disk with Nero. The first attempt, about halfway through the burn Nero says there is a problem with the sound. I try it again same thing. I opened it up with Shrink and there is a cyclic redundancy error. As I have read in previous posts that specific problem is because the disk is damaged. This error for me occured while already copying onto the hard drive. Is it the same problem in both instances? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Can you post a Nero log (without the serial of course)?

My killer sig came courtesy of bb "El Jefe" mayo.

kinza...like Nephilim suggested, a burn log would be great. Something else you might try is dl'g DVD InfoPro (freeware). Use the icon with the pencil. It will tell you if there are any errors on your source DVD.

And if you have not already done so, try cleaning the source DVD You are trying to copy, and check for any obvious damage.

And use the Nero DriveSpeed utility to slow down the read speed of the DVD-ROM drive you are using. Or better yet, use your recorder to read the source disc and slow down it's read speed as Recorders usually do a better job of extracting.

I just need to know if the problem is because of the DVD or my burner. My DVD is scratched numerous times and I can admit that it is in bad shape, but I have burned worse. Thanks for your help.

I was using the Nero InfoTool and when I went to the ASPI tab, under ASPI installation and System ASPI, on the bottom it says that ASPI installation is corrupted. I recently upgraded my firmware from an Afterdawn suggested website, does this have anything to do with it?

If you want to know if any disc is readable, run it through DVD InfoPro. What did it tell you on this scratched DVD?

Most of the time a corrupted ASPI will cause problems. I don't think upgrading your firmware should corrupt the ASPI.

Do you want me to go to the DVD read error test?

Our posts are crossing each other. Yes, do the read test, but...

I think we should update your ASPI, though. You can download ForceASPI18 form here. Also download CHKASPI to confirm it went OK. If you need any help with this, please post.

Thanks for the help with the ASPI stuff, it is now correctly functioning. Here is part of the DVD Error check report, I stopped in the middle because I thought I got a good idea of how many scratches there are on the disk.

I think it is safe to say that you have a few read errors. :). How important is this DVD to you, i.e., can it be replaced? Normally scratches can be polished out with a device called Skip Doctor. Here's a review. I think it costs around $30.

I have also found some reading tools more sensitive than others. The best ripper I have found is SmartRipper. You can dl it here at AD. Use "Backup" mode after you point to the destination folder. If it gets through the DVD without any red warnings, you will be able to burn the output.

I would rather just replace the disk which is probably only $10 now. I have to mention that when I used Shrink it read the DVD fine, but in the middle of the burn it just stopped. I think it is safe to say that the media is causing this problem, right?

Yes, the media is causing the problem. Not all readers are created equal, though. Here is what I've found from my own experience:

Shrink - good
Decrypter - better
Smartripper - best

I felt that SmartRipper's interface wasn't too user-friendly. Thanks for your help. For copying the DVD to my hard drive I was using DVD43 and Nero Recode 2, it was my first time with that program so it didn't seem that good when I encountered problems. Usually I use Shrink but sometimes I use Decrypter and then Shrink. Thanks again Doc409.

Smartripper has a lot of features that aren't needed, and it clouds the picture. All you really have to do to use it is to point to a destination folder, and click on the Backup tab, and then press Start.
