I am planning on buying a video stabilizer for removing Macrovision copy protection so that I can copy from VHS to DVD and from DVD to DVD using my DVD Recorder (Pioneer DVR-220).

I was originally planning on buying a Lik-Sang video stabilizer, either this one for $25, which is for copying DVD to VHS:
http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?products_id=1365

or this one for $35, which is for copying VHS to DVD and DVD to DVD:

http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?products_id=2950

But then I read this website, which says that the $35 Lik-Sang video stabilizer doesn't work, so I assume that the $25 one probably doesn't work either:

http://www.biline.ca/ati_macrovision.htm

And that website (above) also says that the Sima "Video Copymaster" (Model SEM-CM) doesn't work either. Here's a description of the Sima SEC-CM (which sells for $40):

http://www.adorama.com/VDSICMR.html

So I would like to hear people's recommendations about which video stabilizers are good and which ones don't work.

Also I would like to know if anyone has tried this one:

Does it work? And how is the picture quality?

Hi Mark40, I built my macrovision remover from a kit many years ago for VHS TO VHS copies. Watch out for the cheaper versions. They don't work very well. A friend of mine bought one called Big Red that looks like a RED egg shape. He claims it works great but it was about $60. or $70.. Let me see if I can find a link somewhere.
Here it is.

I haven't used it so everything I told you is hear-say.
My home built one still works good.

Has anyone tried the Sima CT-2? It's usually $100, but I found it for only $70 at this website:

http://buybestforless.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/2001

It has both S-video and composite inputs and outputs.

Does it work for both layers of Macrovision? I've heard that some video stabilizers will only work for Macrovision 1 but not for Macrovision 2, which means they will let you copy VHS to DVD but not DVD to VHS or DVD to DVD. I would like to be able to copy DVD to DVD and VHS to DVD, so I need something that removes both layers of Macrovision.

Take care not to be fucked. Many of so called stabilizers works only with Macrovision Layer1.
A few of them can remove Layer 2 and/or CGMS/A. I personaly use one from dimax http://www.dimax.com.ua/English/dvd_recorder.htm
It works just fine with my borth Panasonic DMR and Philips DVDR-75 recorders.
Before I had two under $50 stabilizers.
One was Sima and second I do not remember. Sima did not work with DVD recorders. The second one had a very bad picture quality.

I tried the Video Magic/DVD product with very good results. Made perfect copies of my DVD collection.
