Hey guys, I really need some help. I am going to buy an inexpensive external DVD BURNER (I have a laptop) to backup my DVDs and Playstation 2 games. My price range is about 100 dollars, and I don't know where to look or what to look for- I'm computer illiterate. Can someone please reccommend a good product (link?). Also, is there a program I have to buy (like DVDxCOPY) to be able to back up DVDs? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The Lite-On SOHW-812SX would be my recommendation for an external burner within your price range.

Keep in mind that you need a USB 2.0 port for the burner to work properly. Here's a link that shows you how to check your USB controllers:

If your laptop doesn't have native USB 2.0 support you might look into a PCMCIA card for thet.

If you like throwing money away then get Xcopy. The company is out of business so it isn't being officially supported any longer and the software wasn't that great anyway.

I'd recommend looking at DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Both are free, work great and will do everything you need. Here's a fun Shrink guide written by our very own ScubaPete:

My last, and most important, advice would be to get good media. You can buy cheap crap media if you want but you'll regret it. The best deals going are RiDATA branded Ritek that can be found here http://www.newegg.com/ and here http://www.rima.com/ .

Thank you SOO much for helping me get started. I just made the following purchases off of newegg.com:

DVD+R RIDATA DRD+478-RDCB100 100PK N82E16817132367 1 $57.00
EXT CD\DVD-RW LITE ON SOHW-812SX N82E16827106944 1 $99.00

That's for the burner and 100 blank recommended DVD's. I also downloaded DVD Shrink (which I hope I'll be able to figure out!!). Besides that, is there anything else besides the actual DVD's I will need to get started backing up DVD's?

Also, will I be able to backup Playstation 2 games with the burner?

Thanks!

Anytime :)

You should be in good shape to back up PS2. Shrink isn't too hard especially with the guide ScubaPete wrote.

If you run into any snags you know where to ask ;)
