Is it fair to say, in your opinion, that the best burning tool is clone dvd-2? What about the difference between clone dvd2, Nero or dekrypter, just as the burning tool? Which is better and more reliable. I have used all of them, and it seems the outcome is the same, am I right?

No just my preference ... flavor of the month :)

No difference IMO, they all work great.
The only program I've noticed a difference is using DVD Rebuilder w/ CCE Basic for longer movies ... movies over 6.5GB's or so.

But what if you don't have Nero? I've got Decrypter and Shrink, but use Sonic for general DVD burning.
My copy of DVD-Shrink doesn't seem to have the option of creating an ISO file. Am I missing something? All I can do is create the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders on my HD with DVD-Shrink.
I know this an "advanced" thread, but could someone tell this newbie what I should do with those folders? I don't think I can just burn them like data folders, 'cause it wouldn't be properly formatted for a DVD player.
I want to use DVD-Shrink to create the ISO files. Can this be done without Nero? Or if not, is there a "Nero-Lite" that costs less than the hefty pricetag of $99 and will work with DVD-Shrink?

The option to generate an ISO image should be found in the "Backup!" window, under "Select Backup Target".
If it doesn't appear, try re-installing DVD Decrypter.
If the option is still missing, try then to re-install DVD Shrink. ;)

I just tried reinstalling both, and the problem remains. Here are the details:
DVD-Shrink Backup! window provides the following options:
Under the "Target Device" tab, there are to options. The first is "To enable burning a disc, please install the latest version of Nero". This is where the afterdawn tutorial shows the pulldown menu you describe, but that's not an option here. Next, there is "Select target folder for DVD output files" and the result will be the creation of the Video_TS and Audio_TS folders on your HD.
What can I do with these options in order to burn to DVD using the software that I have? (Decrypter, Shrink, Sonic)? Can I do anything with those files Shrink puts on my HD using Decrypter, possibly?

Mayaboy, have you restarted your PC after each re-install?
I'm pretty sure you could use Sonic to burn the files, but not being a Sonic user I can't help you with the "how".
Hopefully someone who does know the procedure with Sonic will come to your help. ;)

I just tried again, making sure to shut down and restart after each uninstal and after each reinstal. But the same menu items are available (only save files to HD, no pull-down menu with an ISO option).
Do you have Nero on your machine? If so, maybe that unlocks the pull-down menu?
Or, maybe I have an old or odd version of DVD-Shrink? I'm running version 3.1.4

You have to uninstall the old version first, restart, install new version, restart. Now you can backup iso files.

The best explanation can be found on afterdawn's site:
http://www.afterdawn.com/tools/dvd_layer.cfm
Scroll down and click on the two tutorials for Shrink and Decrypter.
Please, anybody correct me if I'm wrong... But if you are dealing with a DVD-9 original (a DVD with more than 4.7 gigs on it) you need to use DVD-Shrink. This will decrypt it, compress it, and create an ISO image that you can burn using your favorite burning software (including DVD-Decrypter).
If you have trouble decrypting using only DVD-Shrink, then you can run it through Decrypter first. But this is usually not necessary.
If the original DVD is small enough that it will fit on a blank DVDR without compression - you can use DVD-Decrypter without ever using DVD-Shrink. It will decrypt it, create an ISO image, and burn it all at once. These discs are called DVD-5 (under 4.7 gigs)
Again, check out the tutorials, they make it pretty clear when you need to use each one.

Sorry, should have said 4.36 gigs, not 4.7. That's the limit of DVD-5's and the boundary where you definitely need to use DVD-Shrink.

Okey guys ,I´m new here. Just wanted to point out that I have been using Shrink and hey,it works fabulous. Okey ,I had a few goofs at the beginning due to cheap discs(never again),but since I changed to a make that starts with T and ends with K,great no failures; and I DON´T use Nero,I have Record now from Sonic. I analyize, decrypt and backup in aprox 40 mins. Burning takes about 15 mins from a saved iso file. Never used Decrypter, don´t think I ever will.
I see you show pc specs, mine are: pentium 4/ht 3Ghz,1Gbddr,160Gbhd,128mbv,hp writer 400i,hl-dt-st dvd rom

Hey guys. I am up to 150 dvds. I just use DVD Shrink. I do have DVD Decrypter and Nero installed on my computer so I don't know which program is doing the burning. (I don't think it matters) For a DVD-9 movie, it takes me about 15 minutes to encode and 10 minutes to burn. I get great quality and, until recently, no coasters. I only use ritek G04 media (4x dvd-r) and I have:
athlon 2800
1.2 gb ram
lite-on 8x burner
Lately, however, I have had issues. (I now have more coasters than cups to put on them) The last 10 dvds that I've copied have screwed up at least once. I usually get an error that says that it DVD Shrink couldn't copy to disk but that the files were successfully saved to the hard drive. Then I use DVD Shrink again to open those files, shrink them a tad more, and the burn usually goes well. (but at the cost of more time and another disk)
Today, I am trying to back up eternal sunshine of the spotless mind (great movie). The same thing happened. I tried my solution and it still didn't work. This time I got a "programming error" right when I started encoding. Nero, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter are the newest versions (not beta). Now, even if I start from scratch, I get the programming error. After reading this thread, I tried the DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink combo punch... DVD Decrypter did its part but DVD Shrink just crashed to the desktop again. To rule out corruption of one of my programs or a problem with my computer, I copied another movie (just with shrink) and it worked fine. Is this movie using some new, space age, encrypting technology? (this reminds me - my recent problems have been with new releases) Help a brother out!!
- sorry for length -

I don't know about your issue with Eternal Sunshine, but here's a tip for your previous problem...
If the files were written correctly by DVD-Shrink, but failed during burning, and if re-compressing them a bit more worked, then you might want to try using "custom" compression settings that leave just a little bit of free space (like 10 megs). I've had issues with various media when you push them to their max load. Keep yourself just a little bit away from the edge and you might have better luck. That extra 10 megs of compression is a tiny sacrifice for the peace of mind that you won't have to do it over again.

Wow, I just read that Eternal Sunshine thread linked above, and found a great little trick I hadn't known about.
The easiest solution to the problem of copying Eternal Sunshine appears to be running DVD-Shrink in Reauthoring mode and just lifting the main movie out for burning. This is a great idea for any movie that has a lot of useless extras, or if you want to use the least amount of compression possible on the main movie.
Just thought I'd pass this along. I'm sure most of you already knew this, but it was new to me.

thanks for the help. It's good to know that it is just the movie. I have used the DVD Shrink reauthor before successfully. However, when I tried it with eternal sunshine, I couldn't do anything with it. No options were highlighted. I'm using DVD Decrypter again now,(I accidentally deleted the files it did before) then I will try to burn it with Nero recode 2. I will post again this evening to share the results.
