oops, I suck... I just looked at the reauthoring instructions and realized that I didn't do it right. So it may work. However, I am still going to try Nero recode first as I don't want to change the disk if I don't have to.

Kranecu,

Im over 150 movies with zero problems so far, but I have heard a few people say they have to back off from using the whole dvd up by 10 megs or so. My theory is that its the burner brand. My Plextor has had no such problems, but other brands seem to and everything else seemed to be the same between me and the other guys. Check out the thread 'Ripping Passion of the Christ' for more on that. So far, I've never had to back off and compress more. I really think its in the drive.

Also, just wanted to suggest the obvious: Burner Bios updates, ASPI layers, inspect outer edge of DVDs for defects (This just happened to me with the last 3 of a 50 pack of Verbatim 12X discs).

interesting... you say to use DVD Shrink WITH dvd clone 2? I thought they were different programs to do the same thing... recode. Am I wrong? I still haven't been able to copy this movie.

Most recently I tried using DVD Decrypter to remove encryption, then shrinking with Nero recode. That didn't work. I haven't done anything with my drive. I feel as though 150 dvds without a problem would imply that the firmware and bios and such are ok... maybe I'm wrong. I will post more later. You guys rock. thanks a lot.

here it goes... I have acquired clonedvd2. <ahem> and I am going to try writing the image that I made with DVD Decrypter. Nothing else has worked. So far, so good. It has only ran for about 1 minute and it is already 15% encoded. Shrink couldn't even get that far. It seems a little faster than shrink.

Does this program remove encryption too or do you have to use DVD Decrypter with it? If it can do it all like DVD Shrink, I might consider switching to it all together.

How about this... I expect to stump everyone with this one.

The 150 dvds that I've done before eternal sunshine that have worked perfectly have all played as such on my sony dvd player. I have a toshiba that hasn't played any of them very well.

Ok. I finally got eternal sunshine to copy by using DVD2One to make the files and then using Nero recode 2 to burn it to disk. (tried shrink after DVD2One and it failed) So I was happy. It played on my computer.

Here is the kicker: My sony said "dirty disk" and would not play it. (still playing other dvds) My Toshiba piece of junk played it perfectly. How 'bout them apples?

I've used DVD Shrink to decrypt and compress the size of the original disc to an ISO Image of just under 4.7 Gigs in size. Then I have DVD Decrypter set up in DVD Shrinks options to burn the ISO Image. It's a couple clicks and an hour to an hour and a half (depending the length of the movie) you're done. How much easier can that be. I've burnt 100's of movies without a problem. I at times will use Nero 6 to burn the ISO Image and that works flawless also. I think DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter is an excellent and very, very easy to use and the best thing is they are free!

addybill,
As far as burn speed slower is always better because you will use less CPU which means your system will operate much more stable than at high CPU. If you're not in a hurry I think 2.4X or 4X is sufficient. 4X will burn your movie in about 15 minutes. That's sure fast enough for me. Whether writing data to a blank DVD or CD the slower the write speed the less change you have of getting writing errors. With DVD writing speeds up to 16X's now I wander sometimes what holds the Discs together from shattering. Beleive it or not this can happen and I've experienced it. Also DVD's spin much, much faster than CD's so if you have any errors do to too fast of writing speed it will show up more often than writing errors on CD's.

Addybill,

It basically depends on the media and on the burner. Typically the program you are burning with won't let you go TOO fast for the media. I have Verbatim 8X discs that say right on the box they will burn at 12X, and they do. In my drive. The drive's firmware is a large factor. Im blessed with a real quality drive (Plextor PX-712A). It's a 12X dvd+r/8X dvd-r drive. Plextor constantly updates the firmware for this drive, as they figure out how to make it work with more brands of media. (I think the media guys and the burner guys of all different companies work together alot, because it's a win/win situation for both of them to be compatible with eachother).

In my Plextor, so far if I use media that's 4X, I can burn at 8X max. If it's 8X, I can burn at 12X max. BUT... Im going to Plextors website and looking at their media compatibility list. You should do the same. If your drive manufacturer doesn't have one, that's cheesy. Look at Plextors website... they do it right. AND they tell you how fast the media is rated as well as how fast it will burn.

Bear in mind, just because it burns a 8X at 12X in my 12X drive, doesn't mean it will in yours.

Also, I agree with the other post... slower the better if you have the time. It can't hurt. Although... I've never made a coaster trying to overburn. The disc capability must be recorded from the factory onto the disc, cause DVDinfoPro reads the blanks and tells you exactly what it can do before hand. I don't know if it factors in whether YOUR drive can do it, or just SOME drives.

Sorry so long, hope this helps.

Pontistv is absolutely right about brands of drives keeping up with the media manufactures through constant Firware updates. I've run LiteOn drives forever (cheaper and will keep up with the best of them) and they keep you updated constantly through Firmware updates. I'm not sure who is first as far as technology. We now have the Dual Layer burners out but the Dual Layer media is alsmost impossible to find right now. The great advantage to this is you will no longer have to compress your video files (DVD Shrink) which decreases quality. We will now be able to decrypt (encode) and burn. The burn process will take about twice as long as before but the quality will be outstanding. It will be almost an exact clone.

When the media finally comes down, the dual layer thing will be sweet. Most of the movie DVD's will fit on it with no compression at all! But I don't think it will be quite that fast. Its my understanding that burners right now burn D/L discs at 2.4X. As opposed to the average burner going 8X, with some capable of 16X... 2.4X could take a very long time, especially considering the movies won't be compressed. So Im guessing it could take about 2 hours just for the burning process.

As for drives, I've been researching this for a while... at least in the reading department. Check out my posts under 'High tech discussion on fast ripping speeds'. I found out real quick all drives are not the same. As for Lite-on, I've heard such good things about their dvd-rom that I bought one. It exceeding 16X (16.6x actually) in read speeds on a standard DVD-5 movie (a 4.7GB factory disc). That's even better than my beloved Plextor. But when it comes to dual layer reading (aka ripping), my Plextor spanks em all.

Im off subject, but that gets back to firmware and good drive manufacturers in relation to burn speeds.

Hi kranecu - I noticed no reply to your message wrt stumping folks on eternal sunshine; so either that a mood altering substance or a movie; I suspect the latter :) Anyway I have a gazillion movies of which I have never ever had any issue dup'ng after I got the process perfected. That said, if eternal sunshine is a movie, I will buy it (hope my wife likes it) and make a backup and let you know the results. I doubt very much you will stump me... it's all in the wrist, or is it the mouse clicks?

Seriously though, when burning (not so much authoring or rendering) disable 'blacklisted' programs and services, disable screensaver. Burn slower than media manufacturer recommends i.e. if 8X burn 4X, if 4X burn 2X. I suspect you will see few if any mishaps.

Best. R

AnyDVD disables any copy protections and region codes.

Nope ... just make sure it's on. You should see it in your system tray.

Baically AnyDVD by Slysoft when enabled runs in the background. If it is running it will show up in your taskbar as a red fox face. If the DVD dosen't need to be compressed to fit on a 4.7 Gig blank then all you need is any DVD burning program to copy the DVD while AnyDVD removes the copy protection. If the DVD requires compression then you will need a recoding program like Nero Recode 2 or a compressing program like CloneDVD2 to do the job. AnyDVD works very nicely as I've used it to copy many a movie.

I agree pulsar! I've been using it for a while now. I usually check the properties of the DVD movie I am going to copy and if it's under 4.5 gigs I just use Nero 6 Copy DVD to DVD and it's done in about 15 minutes or so. If there has to be any encoding I use either Nero Recode 2 or CloneDVD 2 to encode the DVD and then burn. AnyDVD works very well and super fast. I also use DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter when I need a little change. They are all great programs.

Hello everybody.

I use DVD Decrypter because I use IFO edit on the files to skip immedatly to the main menu without going through all that FBI warning crap. Also, I don't mess around with ISOs or anything like that. I rip the files directly and use Nero recode to shrink them down to size and then burn to a DVD. Using this method I have had all good DVDs. Thats my two cents.

Re: Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

I just copied this using Shrink. I used some "custom ratio" compression to get a better main movie. Copied the files to my hd, then burned them with Clone DVD. It plays perfectly in my Sony player.

Hola wylds

There is a lot of info at doom9.net. A lot of it is pretty advanced so I will just tell you simply how to work with the menus.

1. rip the dvd in file mode with dvd decrypter
2. Open up ifo edit and VIDEO_TS.IFO
3. In the ifo edit window, click on the + icon next to VMGM_MAT. It is at the very top of the screen.
4. Then highlight First Play PGC
5. Now in the bottom window of Ifo edit, scroll all the way down to the PGC command table.
6. Right click on the first Pre-command and insert command.
7. Now right click on the command you just made and edit command.
8. In the Change Command menu, find "(JumpSS_VMGM) Jump to VideoManager Menu" and put title menu in the box under it.

9. Now you are done. Save the IFO file and burn with Nero or something similar. To test to see if your menu changes are correct you can click on DVD PLAY in ifo edit to see if eveything is fine. Every once in a while the above method won't work and in that case you will have to change the menu command to "jump to title set menu" and point it to the correct title set for the menus.

If you are having trouble with this, I can send some screenshots of the right steps in IFO edit. Also it might help to read up on how the file system in a DVD actually works. It is very specific and every DVD is made with the exact same file system rules.

Hi kranecu - Sorry it took me a few days but I finally got around to testing a burn of Eternal Sunshine and have successfully dup'd with DVD Shrink 3.2; not sure what your dup problem might have been/is but I did not encounter any issues.

Eternally yours, Sunshine... er I mean regor :)

I have been backing up a lot of new releases lately and DVD Shrink is not working on any of them. I have swithed my default method to running anyDVD in the background and using DVD Decrypter. then I use clone dvd 2. It takes longer and required a few more clicks but it seems to work. It has failed to work on the full disk twice (with eternal sunshine and The Day After Tomorrow), but didn't ruin my dvd-r upon failing like shrink does. Then I can just put the main movie on the disk and leave off the extras. I am hoping for a new update to DVD Shrink that allows it to consistently be able to beat the encryption of the newer movies. Until then, I guess I have to put in more work.

Oh, another thing, and this may be useful to a lot of people: I have 3 dvd players (not counting those in my computers). Using my old method (just DVD Shrink with Nero), DVDs would only play on my Sony. This new method allows me to play them on my Sony and my Toshiba (which are less than 1 year old) and my old Apex (which is more than 4 years old).

My conclusion: best method as of today is DVD Decrypter and clone dvd 2 with anyDVD running in the background.
