Curious kranecu... why didn't I have that issue? I took your challenge to burn Eternal Sunshine with DVD Shrink and it worked fine. hmmmm planets are aligned for me, not you?? Others on the post reported success as well.

I've been using DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter with Nero for a long time now but I optained a copy of Slysofts AnyDVD recently and did a speed comparison between DVD Shrink with DVD Decrypter to AnyDVD with Nero Recode 2 and found AnyDVD and Nero Recode 2 to be much faster and the quality turned out great. AnyDVD especially works great for movies under 4.7 Gigs. I just pop the movie in my read drive then pop a blank in my write drive and enable AnyDVD then open Nero and select DVD-Copy and 15 minutes later I got a copy. I don't think it gets faster than that. I would have to say AnyDVD has the advantage for movies that will fit on a DVD5 without compressing. When Dual layer discs become more available and the prices drop AnyDVD would be a great choice if you want to decrypt on the fly while burning. It sure will save a lot of time.

I just talked to a friend of mine and he didn't have a problem with eternal sunshine either. Nor has he had problems with other new releases that I have not been able to copy with DVD Shrink. Yet, if you look through the posts, I am not alone. Others are having the same issues. It doesn't seem as though success v. failure is dependent on the version of shrink. (I have the newest version - 3.2 I think) I also have the latest updates for Nero. It can't be differences in media as the errors occur before writing. Yet, there must be a difference somewhere.

Is it possible that dvds released in different regions have different encryptions? Can anyone explain this?

kranecu,

If you bought the movie ... go and rent it or use your friends. Some discs are bad from the factory ... as far as ripping them.

I have never had any of the movies stump me that others have reported, and I always use Decrypter to rip and Shrink to burn (with Nero burning enabled). Versions of Shrink don't seem to make a difference.

My theory is that you guys with problems have something else wrong. It's not the software. Perhaps the problem lies in ASPI layers, or ram. Or available hard drive space (it takes 4.37 GB of space available on the hard drive to use shrink, you know).

There's an article on this website somewhere that mentions the top ten things for noobies to do to help ensure success of burning. It's definitely worth a read, as it puts all the little details we hear about in one article.

Also make sure your firmware is up to date for your burner. And DEFINITELY don't try to copy from one drive to the burner "on the fly" using the same secondary IDE channel. The channel can't support both IDE drives at full speed. It switches back and forth, and that could be a real problem if you're burning!

Until a month ago, I only used DVD Decrypter to rip and Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 to burn backups of my DVDs. At that time my younger son showed my how to use the latest version of DVD Shrink and I am now a beliver. So far I've only run into one (1) DVD that I had to Decrypter before using Shrink (and it turned out perfect). I am such a believer, I have created a "How To Use DVD Shrink" page for newbies on my web site. The address of that page is: http://mysite.verizon.net/eric.groves/pg46.html

eric545,

You might want to mention ... with your guide you lose the menu function.

With the new Shink you can insert a still image or picture, and retain the menu.
