Just bought an external Memorex True 8x burner and Memorex DVD+R 8x media. Been burning discs successfully via the USB 2.0 port except it takes over an hour to burn 4.7Gigs.

here is my config
Nero 6 Express
P3 1.3Ghz, 1 Gig RAM
Windows 2000

Went into the device drive to check the DMA settings but i'm not sure what to do here.

Under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section, i have
- Primary IDE Channel
- Secondary IDE Channel

checked the properties of both of these and 'Transfer Mode' is set to 'DMA if available' for Device 0 and Device 1 for both IDE channels.

any help would be much appreciated
thanks

*moved to appropriate forum*

Are you positive it's a USB 2.0 port?

What brand/type media are you using?

Firmware up to date for your drive?

USB and chipset drivers up to date?

how can i check if it is a USB 2.0 port?

did some checking in the device manager and here is what i came up with

Under the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
instead of using the primary or secondary IDE channels, the drive is using an
- Intel(R) 82801CAM Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 248A

and in the properties tab for this, there is no DMA setting. Is there any way i can get the drive to use the secondary controller?

Also under the 'Universal Serial Bus controllers i have the following three listings
- Intel(R) 82801CA/CAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2484
- USB Mass Storage Device
- USB Root Hub

ok, so went and got a generic CompUSA PCMCIA USB 2.0 card installed it, everything looks like it works fine, i.e. it started burning at 8x and about 10 minutes and 86% into it it just hangs and i get a coaster.

Also the only way to acess the drive after this is to reboot the machine.

tried this with two discs and same result. I'm using Memorex brand 8x DVD+Rs

any ideas?
thanks again

Did you install the latest drivers for the new card?

yes, did that as well

should i try burning at a slower speed 6x and see what happens? (just tired of wasting media on coasters)

also flashed the drive with the latest firmware ver 1.13 (which is actually for the OEMed pioneer drive)

I'd try a 4X burn. I'm not a fan fan of burning past 4X anyway.

You might want to pick up a rewritable DVD to use until you get this sorted out ;)
