Hello, I recently started to back up my dvd collection for college and I have run into a problem I have been using DVDXCOPY Express to copy them and it has been working flawless...or so I thought. I tried to watch one on my Xbox and it didnt work. I got the error msg that said that Xbox didnt recognize the disc. Now this is odd for several reasons. First I have watched several of the discs that i had already burned with no problems, same media, same burning technique. Alright, so i recopied it thinking there was a problem, no such luck, still stalled out loading the disc. I tried it using a stand alone player that I KNOW can read DVD+Rs--no luck. So I went through my whole collection of copies, about 15, and about 7 of them caused the exact same problem. I even tried them in my computer, and it acted like it wasnt even a movie. I tried to use DVDXCOPY platnium, no luck. I also downloaded Anydvd and Clone DVD2, and once again no problems with burning or ripping, but they refuse to play. Could someone please help? Thanks in advance

BTW I am using noname media that I bought off the internet. But I cant imagine that the problem is caused by the media because I have retried several of the copies over and over again and each time those movies caused problems. Thanks again

That's most likely your problem. Low quality media is notoriously inconsistent, some work some don't, as well becoming unreadable after a relatively short amount of time due to poor data integrity.

Use this tool to get the manufacturer ID off the media and let us know what it is.

I tried that prog to ID the discs and it is not working here is the error msg "
"
[23:28:52] ** Initiating ADIP Retrieval Method 1 (Original ADIP)
[23:28:52] ADIP Read M1 Failed : Illegal request - Invalid field in CDB [05/24/00]
[23:28:52] ADIP Read Method 1 Not Supported ; A Firmware Upgrade Is Recommended
[23:28:52] ** Initiating ADIP Retrieval Method 2 (Copy Of ADIP)

[23:28:52] ADIP Read Method 2 Requires A Written DVD+R/+RW Disc
[23:28:52] Disc Identification Did Not Complete Successfully"

Also I dont understand why the media would be to blame as I have tried the same disc many times with different discs with no luck. BTW an update. I tried a few on my friends comp with the same set up, save DVDXCOPY and same discs and he is able to copy the movies in questions...the plot thickens.....Thanks for your continuted help!

Alright I realized that you need a full disc to do the ID so i put one that was working. It was an Optodisc, by the optodisc technology corp. Media type OR4. Sorry for the confusion

Hi there ReedW,

Phase CHANGE isn't one of your better dye types. You need a much, much better grade of DVD discs.

USE RiData, Sony, TDK, Ritek G04, Verbatim DataLife, Verbatim DataLife Plus, media boasting ?Advanced Metal AZO", Taiyo Yuden's and generally, almost any discs manufactured by Mitsubishi are excellent bets. Other media could very well cause errors, only the very best media should be used for DVD Video backups. Now is defiantly not the time to put your, "Boy did I save money buying this crappy cheap stuff." in - )

When I speak of "Cheap" or "Inexpensive" media, I'm not referring to the price you pay at the counter - I'm referring to the type of composite some manufactures use, their method of dye application and the lack of OR the poor quality control used during manufacturing. When I say "Branded" that means that when you pick up a disc in your hand, it says "Ritek" or "RiData" on the disc itself. The monetary cost of the media we recommend many times is cheaper than what you are purchasing now.

We like to verify our information prior to recommending things. There are certain things we look at. For instance, when their dye and dye application are listed as unknown, this almost guarantees us they are using whatever they can get at a cheap price. Companies that use quality materials like to BRAG about it, naming names and staying with quality manufacturers who produce their media.

BTW, when I'm talking about "Cheapo" media, I'm not saying it won't burn - Some of it may burn, some may not. It's quality is inconsistent, meaning it's not dependable. I'm saying that you can expect problems from it. i.e., trouble with it being recognized OR playing in standalone players, "Skipping" and "Freezing". Use it at your own risk and we'll not say, "I told you so." if you don't come back and complain about problems with your backups. That's a good deal, right ? Yea, I knew you'd agree -

Cheers,

Pete

Alright I dont mean to harp, you have been exceedingly helpful, but it does it make sense that I have, through three discs have not been able to burn copies of certian movies, while a friend had no trouble whatsoever using the same media. Also, I'll probably buy a pack of ridatas, but am unsure of the GO4s. Are they the one with the arrow and the green spindle

What make/model burners are you and your friend using? What firmware versions?

Different makes and models of drives use different firmwares which can make a world of difference in performance with any given brand/type of media.

Well I have evidently have the infamous toshiba sd-r6252 which has, on other forums (http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=24727&postdays=0&postorder=asc&&start=0), been blamed for systemic problems such as mine. I am calling HP to today to get the scoop

ReedW,

The site you linked to about the RiData disc are indeed G04 discs. I've got many hundreds of burns with them, you'll do fine with them.

Pete

Are all RiData Ritek disks cool to use? The G05's and so forth? I'm about to drop a large amount of money on a 100 spindle and just want to confirm.

Make sure whatever Riteks you buy are branded such as RiDATA if you're here in the States. Unbranded Riteks are oftentimes not the same quality as the branded ones.

If you provide us a link to the media you're looking at we may be able to tell you if they're the good stuff or not :)

there's several different kinds of RiTek here, including the G04s -- but those are only 4x.

http://www.blankdvdmedia.com/ridata8xsm.php

i'm in Canada, by the way. so this is probably among the cheapest deals i can get.

if you guys aren't sure about the G05's, guess i'll make due with the 4X G04's and just wait the extra 20 minutes out.

Hi there Haygirl,

I see no reason to shut down McAfee. I've run it for years without problems.

You might want to uninstall it then reinstall it - make sure you have everything for a reinstall first as there isn't any tech support to turn to.

If that doesn't work, let us know and we'll hook you up with a decent FREE proggy to do your backups with -

Cheers,

Pete & welcome to aD

hi hayngirl,
have you done a defrag of your system lately. With the amount of data that your computer processes due to the transfer of dvd info you need to do one on a regular basis. This might decrease the time it takes to burn a disc

Haygirl,

Since you're not backing up at all, you'll have to go over DVD XCopy's "Black List". Remember, 321 is out of business and cannot offer any support- But we'll try to get you going -

Black List for DVD XCopy

by Brobear
The following programs can cause problems while using 321 Studios software:
1. B's Clip: This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot to remove it.
For more information, visit the B's website at http://www.bhacorp.com.
2. Direct CD or Drag to Disk: These are applications from Easy CD Creator from Roxio. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. To remove them you need to go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel. There you can select Easy CD Creator to Change - not Remove. Then you click next until it gives you the option to Modify. Then either Direct CD or Drag to Disk should be selected and changed to "make this option not available". Then click Next. While the program may look like it is installing, it is actually removing those options.
For more information, please visit Roxio's website at http://www.roxio.com/en/support.index.jhtml
3. GoBack: This is backup software that constantly runs in the background (Terminate and Stay Ready) which not only needs to be turned off, but disabled. Unfortunately, this may cause some restore points to vanish, but it will free up a lot of hard drive space.
For more information visit Symantec's web site for GoBack at http://www.symantec.com/goback/index.html
4. DLA: Also HP-DLA, Veritas DLA, and others. DLA stands for Disk Letter Assignment. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start Windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot to remove it.
5. InCD: This is packet writing software that comes bundled with Ahead Nero Burning Rom.
For more information go to Nero's website at http://www.nero.com/en/
6. Interactual Player and PC Friendly Player: These programs are DVD software viewers that often come on DVD movie discs, and will try to install themselves everytime you watch a movie on your computer. Please make sure to NOT let these install. Both programs interfere with all 321 Studios software and should be un-installed from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel when found. In some cases, you will need to uninstall and reinstall our software to restore functionality after removing one of these.
For more information about both players, visit http://player.interactual.com/
7. McAfee Anti-Virus: This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar. The 321 Studios software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using our software, McAfee needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive.
For more info go to McAfee's website at http://us.mcafee.com/default.asp
8. Norton Anti-Virus: This is anti-virus software that when running, can cause errors. It needs to be disabled by right clicking on the icon in the lower right side of the task bar and the automatic updates should be disabled. The 321 Studios software then needs to be restarted. Whenever you are using our software, Norton needs to be disabled to ensure unrestricted access to your drive.
The Norton Website is http://www.symantec.com/
9. StopZilla: StopZilla can hinder required portions of our installer, causing the software to fail. Please completely disable StopZilla, then install our software. Once our software is installed, you may safely enable it again. If you have any difficulty using our software at a later time, you may need to disable StopZilla before going to use our software. Uninstallation is not required.
10. MyStorageGuard: This backup software can hinder certain required files from being copied during the installation. Please disable this program before installing our software, and have it disabled any time you go to use our software. Uninstallation is not required.
11. Napster 2.0: This software includes some basic burning software that can cause burning problems if it is running. You will need to close this program completely before trying to use our software. In some rare cases, you will need to completely uninstall this package to attain full reliability, so if disabling does not solve your issue, please try uninstalling this software, and try again.
12. Easy CD Creator 4.x: Due to the age of this package, it is no longer updated by the authors. There are bugs present in this older system that will cause NUMEROUS problems on your machine, not just with our software. Please Uninstall completely, and consider either the new 6.x version from Roxio (http://www.roxio.com) or Nero 6.x (http://www.nero.com). These packages, installed without the Packet Writing software (DirectCD/Drag to Disk/InCD), all work very well together with our software.
13. NTI FileCD: This program has packet writing software installed with it. This package will load a packet-writing software that will constantly talk to your CD/DVD writer, and can cause a number of issues while trying to write a disc. Disabling this software is not enough, as a portion of this package is always running after you start windows. You will need to uninstall it in Add/Remove Programs, then reboot twice to fully remove it.
For more information go to NTI FileCD's Product page at http://www.ntius.com/default.asp?p=cdmaker/filecd_main
Spyware and Adware - some programs can install other software that can be damaging to your Operating System. Please scan for these programs with a Spyware utility. We recommend Ad-aware, available freely at www.lavasoftusa.com
If you perform any of these changes, you may need to uninstall our software, then re-install to fix any damage left. If you find some of these packages, please shut down and reboot twice to ensure that the last pieces of the conflicting software are completely removed.
Every version of windows requires updates. These updates correct a multitude of problems that are found, on many levels.
To be sure your system is completely up to date go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
If you are using Windows XP please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/default.asp
If you are using Windows 2000 please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/default.asp
You will also want to update your Direct X control to insure full functionality of any of our programs. You will want to download, and install Direct X 9 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads
Certain programs running in the background can use system resources and cause our software to experience burning issues.
To disable your start up group go to start, run, and type in msconfig and hit enter, then click on the startup tab.
Windows XP(Home & Pro):
If you are running Windows XP you will click the disable all button.
Windows Me:
If you are running Windows Me disable all items that are not Windows system processes.
Windows 98:
If you are running Windows 98 disable all items except for Systray, Explorer and Scanreg.
Windows 2000:
Windows 2000 does not have this utility please make sure to close all programs through your system tray.
Please update your ASPI software by installing the software at this link:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70&filekey=aspi_471a2.exe
Follow the instructions carefully, and make sure to reboot afterwards.
Make sure you have the latest firmware update for your writer by visiting the manufacturer's website. Due to legal issues we cannot provide links for you. If you cannot find any update on their website it is recommended to contact them by phone to make sure your firmware is up to date.

OK hayngirl, as andmerr said, it's time to try a program that works -

Off you go girl, to the middle of the page, follow all of the instructions and you'll have a working backup of your DVD in no time -

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2/74599

Stop back and let me know how you made out -

Cheers,

Pete

BTW, After setup this program is quicker (less mouse clicks) and produces a far better backup than DVD XCopy -

Here -

The difference between DVD Shrink and DVD XCopy

DVD XCopy clicks -

1, "Is this a rental or borrowed DVD."
2. "To use this program you must agree to respect the rights of the copyright holders.
3. "Movie Only" OR "Entire Disk"
4 "Start"

DVD Shrink clicks -

1 "Open Disc"
2. "Backup"
3. "OK"
