IO Magic DVD writer problems

I just installed an IO Magic 8X DVD writer and am having a couple of problems. The most obvious one is when I try ro play a movie. I get a message that says something like "this movie is for region 1 and your DVD player is set for region 1". Then it says I have to set my player to region 1 which it already is. One thing I have noticed is that if I look at the drive properties in windows it shows as region 1 until I put a DVD in it. Then it changes to "not selected" as if I had never selected a region. I have tried setting it twice so I only have 2 more changes to go and that didn't help. I emailed IO Magic support and I don't think they understood the problem, based on the answer they gave me. I also tried flashing the firmware but it still acts the same. I'm running XP home SP2. Any ideas?
The other problem is a little more obscure. When I write DVDs from Pinnacle 8, they seem to be ok as long as the video is fairly short. I made a DVD with 8 chapters and a menu (about an hour all together) and the last 4 chapters consistently hang and jitter. I made the same DVD on another computer with the exact same files, processor and software (only the drive is different) and it came out fine.
