Hi,
Most of the guides i have read, describe the use of ReMpeg instead of tmpeg.. is their a reason for this ? I have encoded a couple of movies using tmpeg, and it always seems to give good results.. And without the claimed 24 hour encoding time of ReMpeg

Probably because Rempeg2 is easier to learn. You know that whole audio sync thing. Plus, TMPEG keeps freezing my machine (1.8Ghz, 512MB RAM). Forget go have a coffee, I could fly to Columbia and pick the beans. What's up with that?

i use a Dual Athlon 1.53Ghz, and TMPEG (multi-threaded) can get damn near real-time encoding, even with motion search on best quality.

Rempeg still takes 2 hours for every hour of video.

ReMPEG2 works for me just fine ( at the moment )
its by far the easiest to get to work , and if you do it prior to bed time you can wake up with a finished m2v file ready for getting remuxed in the morning , magic !!! ;0)

I have a 1700XP with 256mb ram and Rempeg2 has been sitting on 99% for hours... how long should it take?? I have tried a couple of different movies and always the same thing 99% for hours. the hard drive is working like buggery so its not hung or anything.

Bring back Laserdisc!!!

rempeg crashes at 99% on my computer too. Just cancel when you reach that point.

I used to have the 99% error too. However after I clean up my hard driver to have more than 10GB left before I run ReMpeg, I have not seen that error again.

I have about 80G free but still sits at 99%.
U R right however I cancel it and it has done the whole movie ok. I does this on both of my PC's . I seem to be getting the quality reduction near the end of the movie as well - it starts to break up etc. but the first 1 1/2 hours or so is perfect?? i usually set it to around 85-90% picture quality and match-source & high quality setting.

Bring back Laserdisc!!!
