I bought some DVD-R over here in Iraq and am having some trouble getting them to burn. Below are the respective error logs and screen shots. I was hoping somebody could give me some insight as to why these DVD?s are not working correctly.

I am having trouble finding any DVD+R over here, and I have yet to find a company that will ship to a military APO address. If any of you know of a company that will ship blank DVD to Iraq please let me know. Or if any of you want to send me some blanks over here, that would be much appreciated too.

Howdy howdy soldier :)

I don't even recognize the media code listed in your log which probably isn't a good thing and from the error messages it looks like your burner doesn't like them.

You're in luck though, one of the best sites to order media from will ship to an APO (I just checked). The site is http://newegg.com and the media you want to get is Ritek RiDATA. I've been through a bunch of them and they're great stuff. If you need anything else just give us a holler :)

God's speed in Iraq my friend.

Hi linuxman, Adding to what Nephilim gave you, it looks like your DMA is OFF for the NEC dvd burner if I read the log right. The Sony and AXV are on but the NEC is OFF. Check them in your device manager, all 3 should be set to DMA not PIO, Check both IDE channels there also. They should be on DMA too. Take care and keep a low profile over there.

The NEC drive is a USB IOMEGA Backpack drive, and I have searched and searched and there is nowhere to set the DMA PIO modes on this drive.

I think the drive is bad, because now, with Memorex DVD+R the burn process completes and it goes to write the lead out and it fails, with a power calibration error. Unable to finish disk at once.

I think I can change the drive out of the backpack case and put another one in there.

Thanks for your suggestions.

That explains it - I don't believe DMA is applicable to USB drives.

Ok, update

I have a new burner and a whole series of new problems have arisen.

1. I bought HP 8x DVD+R media, the manufacture is CC MAC, cannot find any information on that, but.....When I try to use my USB burner with those new disks I get a focus or tracking error. Needless to say that it happens just after the disk is turned into a coaster. It happens with Nero, Alcohol 120% and with Nero and with decrypter.

2. At least with the new burner the afore mentioned dvd -r will burn half of the time. The other half of the time they say invalid media or once again they are turned into coasters with an error that says somthing to the effect of RPA Invalid, or somthing like that.

Man, I long for the good ole days of memorex 8x dvd's in my good ole nec dvd burner, 300 + backups and no coasters. Now in the last 5 days I have about 20. This could become an expensive habit.

1) CMC MAG is one of the lowest grade media on the market and cause lots of problems sp that most likely explains the focus tracking errors.

2) Is the new drive an NEC as well? Have you updated it to the latest firmware?

Are you connecting the drive to a USB 2.0 port? USB 1.1 can cause problems because it isn't fast enough to properly support a DVD burner. Here's a link that shows how to check for USB 2.0:
