I have a second hand drive just for storage purposes (movies ,mp3's etc).I am also using this drive as the target of some file sharing applications (such as DC++).Occasionally, mostly when i leave my pc on for long period of time (a week),i am getting a message from windows :"write delaed failed" or something like that and i cant see my hard drive on the my computer menu any more.Even though when I restart the system, the auto-detect function of bios does not find the hard drive at all!The problem is usually solved when I leave my pc off to cool down and start it again.Anyone has an idea of what is going on??

your drive is giving you a signal it is getting ready to go to harddrive heaven, which means get another drive before it craps out. you might be able to extend drive life by attaching hd fan to it on bottom as circuit board is over heating. what make is the drive as i have sent a # of fujitsu drives for replacement($) as the circuit boards had a flaw in them

Hey gorgio 1!

What kind of hard drive do you have and how old is it?

If it is a Maxtor, there is a diagnostic utility that you can run. It may help you...

Go to this link and dowload Maxtor Powermax.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1386.html

Make a bootable floppy and run the diagnostic.
If it's bad you will know.
It may work for other drives also.

Hey!

It's good to only have hard drves on one IDE cable and other ATAPI devices(CD/DVD) on the other.

Check/change these settings:

1. Bios/Cmos to default settings
2. If you have write caching enabled-- disable it.
To do this..
Start
My Computer
Right click hard drive
Properties
Hardware
Properties
Policies
Uncheck the Enable caching box
3.Make sure your memory usage is set for Programs and not for system cache
Start
Right click My Computer
Properties
Advanced
Performance Settings
Advanced
Memory usage--programs

You'll have to 'cool down your machine' to get the drive back into My Computer.

Disabling disk caching will slow down the drive so try that after you've done the other two and see no improvement.

GOOD LUCK!

put the western on cable with cdrom & leave system on for a day or however long it took before to fail. right now failure points to heat problem which diagnostics software won't pickup until drive fails because it is an intermittent problem & you know how hard they are to find
