This is my second time haveing his problem. I have a HP 400i dvd burner, and CD's burn fien but DVD's dont. I keep getting an error after 1%. The last time I tried switching the DVD burner to the master and the DVD rom to the slave and then uninstalling and reinstalling both the IDE controller and DVD-burner driver, and that worked fine. But now I tried it and it doesnt help my problem. Any program causes a problem, and I've burnt at 2.4X and 4X with TDK's and Sony's. Please help, I have no clue whats wrong. Here's my nero log:

I am having the same problem nero/ulead/sony Not responding when I put in a blank dvd at burn stage Nero will go about 2 seconds before lockup (I have tried 5 different brands) any help Please? reinstalled all programs. reinstalled aspi layer. changed drives from master to slave to cable select.

I've having the same problem. I've tried doing system restores, reintalling Nero, uninstalling every DVD burning program and reinstalling them seperately...I'm about to just completely reformat my hard drive here because this is frustrating as all hell! If anyone can help, I would definately appreciate it, as I'm out of ideas and getting a little ticked.

All of these give me the error that they cannot write to sector 0, and eject the disc.

Could'nt help but notice in your log that Nero is telling you that you have a fixation error. I've seen this before and it usually means there is a problem with your writer.

I'm sorry to say that a friend of mine had the same problem with a CD-writer and unfortunately found himself needing to get a whole new drive. How old is your drive anyway? The problem is hardware based and it should be covered by warranty if you have one. One last thing to try though (If you haven't already) is to do a simulation in Nero, if that doesn't work then i'll bet you it is a software problem, if the simulation does work then im sorry, but, i think you may need a new drive....

This would be a good quick fix, but my burner is integrated into my laptop, also, it's been working fine up until two days ago. It started sputtering, then not doing anything, but then yesterday it randomly burned a full DVD for me, but then the next one it sputtered out on again and hasn't worked since. I would much rather simply reinstall windows and Nero than try to go through the trouble of getting a new laptop or an external DVD Burner, I just don't have that kind of money to throw away on a software issue. One thing is for certain; I won't be using Nero again. I'm sure loads of people use it without problems every day, but Nero has messed up on me twice now, so I'm moving on to greener pastures.

This is the thing that happens it'll work randomly for the moment but it will get worse. Am i correct in assuming that you too are having fixation errors aswell.
If this is the case it is unlikely that uninstalling Nero will resolve your problem. Have you tried burning using Windows native. Hey, i could be wrong. In your particular case you wouldn't need a new laptop, just a new drive. Laptops may not seem like it, but they are modular.

Sometime that it's weird, the same situation started happening to me 2 days ago after everything was working fine. I returned my DVD writer (Memorex 16X) and I got a new one, same problem.

Could this be a virus?

If you check in some other forums this is a problem that has been reporting the last days.

I can only speak from what i have experienced with fixation errors in that it is a hardware issue. It's strange because my friend changed his drive and at first his new drive didn't work, But after getting a replacement for that, it did. Turned out company had batch of defective drives.
If there was a virus going around i don't think it could affect so many different applications, not unless it was a very sophisticated piece of work. Although if you find the problem is only affecting nero then, it is possible.
My friend initially used both nero and windows native to burn and found that windows performed better than nero until his drive completely 'went'.

but after spending and hr on the phone with HP
uninstalling, reinstalling, and restarting they finally told me it was a problem with the hardware which I already knew thanks to aD
and said to send me a new one

That doesn't really help with my 'burning to DVD' problem tho...

I've been working on this almost all week...it keeps failing on 0%, gives me a fail on sector 0 or something like that. This is getting annoying. I would have long ago did a full system restore if I had my discs with me, but thats out of the question at this point...I don't have access to my system restore for another month or so.

Short of buying a new computer, I'm at my wits end. I've uninstalled every thing related to the DVD burning process, did a soft system restore from a backup point, called the customer service number, none of it has worked. I'm really lost as to what to do here.

And I just now tried Windows Explorer, gave me an error as well. So thats out...

Viper you're probably right.

OK Hyperion, first lets clarify an important point, in Nero around the time of when your computer locks are you told that there is a fixation error? If so you won't need a new computer just a new drive. If not there's hope it could be something else.

It just says "Burn process failed at 4x" or 2.4x, whatever I'm burning at. In the log window, it says 'error cannot write to sector 0', nothing about a fixation error that I can see.
