I've used all of the above except Clone. They all work well - I also like http://123copydvd.com/. It cost $ but not too much - $30 US. It's one click and almost idiot proof.

I use DVDXCopy. I've also used DVD Decrypter and DVDShrink and have no complaints, but when it comes to splitting a movie onto 2 DVDs, there's no work involved with DVDXCopy. I never figured out how to do it with DVD Decrypter. The negatives about DVDXCopy is that it puts a welcome screen saying it's a backup, and the copy is not decrypted. In other words, if you wanted to make a second copy, you can't using the first copy as a source. But you can use Decrypter or DVD Shrink to copy the DVDXCopy copy.

I use Intervideo DVD copy to split a DVD9 into two DVD-R's and it doesn't put any weird screens saying it's a backup. The stupid thing is that that second half of the chapters(15-30) on the second DVD always start from 15 even if I select 20. Has this ever happened to anyone even if they don't use this program?

I give Shrink my vote for the rip/compress but when it comes to burning I'm an ardent fan of CopyToDVD. It's solid as a rock and has some handy features you don't get with anything else. I use nothing else since I installed it :)

If your going to buy ... I say AnyDVD w/ CloneDVD2. But for the savings nothing beats DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter.

Ripping doesn't matter and I don't burn faster than 4x.

Hi n0un with reference to your questions about what sort of media, there are many who would say that DVD+ is the better standard. I have not had a problem with DVD- media. Make sure your writer supports whatever you use.
I used to use Princo blanks initially, however; I realised that I had too many problems with movies freezing. Ever since I started using Ritec, there have been no problems whatsoever. I have also used TDK without any problems so far.

nOun,
Its a matter of personal preference. I use DVD- but others swear by DVD+. Use what ever format you like as long as it is compatable with your burner.

Best way to backup DVD'S is rip with DVD Decrypter and compress to 4.7 gig with DVD2One (full disk) then burn with Nero

I would totally recommend DVD Shrink. It does it all, compress and burn all in one program.

Media wise, its like someone said above, its your own personal preferance, I use mostly -R and have not had a single problem yet.

One word of advice...these forums are awsome, the members here are really helpfull and polite. Read alot of the posts and trust me you will learn alot, also don't be afraid to ask a question. Better to find out an answer for sure than to go and make coasters.

Dvd Decrypter (good userability, and lots of features)
Dvd2one (never used anything else, fast and flawless)
Recordnow Deluxe Suite 7.2 (absolutely flawless, inc +R DL media)

Money is well spent with DVD2One and Recordnow.

If it does the job I want, then I pay for it............keeps the programmers producing quality products, with minimal bug fixes.
The authors of DVD2One and Recordnow know what they are doing.............................

In fact it is so easy with them, I am actually get bored doing them now..................................

Choice is yours really, trial some and see which work, and give you the best results................

Obviously the free ones - are tempting...............

My vote goes to DVD Shrink and Nero.. I have burned over 500 DVD's perfect copies with these 2 programs.

Someone posted earlier though that Shrink does it all... Well kind of but you have to have a DVD burning software installed for it to be able to burn. Mine actually uses nero or decrypter since I have both on my system. I get good copies using either, but it seems to burn faster using Nero. The plus to Decrypter is its free.

-R's or +R's hmmm you will find debates (fights) about this subject all over this forum. I have used both with no noticable quality from either. +'s are the new development so you would figure better? -'s are however more compatable with a wider range of players, PS2's, and X-Box. So the choice is really yours. Use what ever works best for you! Personally I use -R's. The main thing is to by a good BRANDED DVD media like Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, or TDK this is much more important...

Thats just my 2 cents :-)

Hi bbmayo,
are you saying that decrypter is capable of burning??? I do not think so.
Maybe I did not understand your statement that Shrink used either Nero or Decrypter to burn

DVD Decrypter does burn ... ISO's only. You can create an ISO with Shrink and auto burn using DVD Decrypter

I have used several different programs to backup DVD's. About a year ago started out with DvdXcopy. I had varying degrees of success with it. Then I discovered DVD Decryptor/DVD Shrink. I used it for several months
but found problems with it also. For one, if want to split a long movie onto 2 DVD's using Re-author you lose the menu's. If you want to copy a TV series DVD you will get questionable quality due to the amouth of data to be coppied. Many publishers put ove 3 hours of material on each dvd. The same goes for DVD Decryptor/Nero 6. Then I tried DVD Decryptor/TMPGEnc DVD Author for TV series DVD's. It works great but it
is labor intensive.

Then I discovered CloneDVD 2/AnyDVD. This is a very elegant piece of software. You can easily copy any DVD and get great quality. I have compared the results with DVD Shrink and I cannot see any difference
on my 36 inch Toshiba TV. You can also easily do the following:

1. Copy any DVD
2. Split any DVD onto 2 DVD's
3. Copy a multi-episode(TV series) DVD onto 2 DVD AND retain the menu's on both DVD's.

I have friends and relatives who have gone the DVD Decryptor/DVD Shrink route and have ALL switched to Clone DVD 2.

One thing I always do when burning the DVD is to set the burn speed one click lower than the DVD's rated speed. In other words if the blank DVD is rated at 8X, I burn it at 6X. For 4X I use 2-2.4X. This way I
gaurantee that my DVD will play in any of my three DVD players. I have Sony, JVC and Philips DVD players. They also play in my Xbox.

The choice is yours. If you're looking for easy, simplicity and great quality CloneDVD 2 is the way to go.

Good luck!

Your first decision is whether or not you want the video quality degraded somewhat, because any compression engine WILL degrade it. You won't notice on a smaller TV, but as you move to larger screens, the degradation becomes more obvious. On a HDTV, even an upconverted non-compressed DVD isn't perfect. It's good, but not quite as clean as an HDTV source. If you have degraded it with some further compression (the original DVD is compressed as an MPG2 file) then you may or may not be happy with the picture.

Older movies often fit on one blank without compression. If I see that a movie needs compression, I will copy to two blanks (1) if I think the video quality will be important to me, or (2) if the movie file is larger than about 5.2 Megs or so (so it must be compressed > 20% or so).

For movies I shrink to one disk, I use DVD Xpress ... simple no-brainer. For movies split over two disks, I use DVDXCopy 1.5.2 .. which was fairly bug-free.

Those of you who compress willy-nilly, and are fussy about video quality, might regret not spending the extra $0.50 for a second burn when you see your results on a larger TV.
