ok, i (kind of) have an idea for a computer together (parts are being looked into and that is as far as i have got).

This is going to be my gaming machine (although i will use it to backup my DVDs too)
I currently don't have a budget set out for it (parents haven't set one yet, and this will be a Christmas present) so, here it goes:

Case:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=11-133-105&depa=1

(Aspire 500W 12V Black Dual Fan Aluminum Power Supply)($54 and $6.99 S&H)

CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-176&depa=1

($150 and free 2nd Day S&H)
and
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&depa=1
(Raptor 10,000 RPM 74GB) ($178) (before $25 mail-in, Free S&H) (Maybe 2)

DVD Burner/DVD-ROM(?):
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=171017
(Pioneer DVD+/-RW, DVR-108, OEM, Black) ($80.00 & Free 2nd Day S&H)
and
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-106-042&depa=0
Lite-On HD166S/167T 16X IDE DVD-ROM Drive (Black)
($30.50 & Free 2nd Day)

Sound Card:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=29-102-178&depa=0
(Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS PCI Sound Card)

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=24-116-276&depa=1
ViewSonic VP171B 17" LCD Monitor ($443.40 and $10 S&H)

P.S. If/when i get a budget for this computer, if the above (with suggestions) is over my
budget, i will let you guys know exactly what my budget is.

TOTAL (So far):
$2258.35 (with 1 Raptor and S&H)
With 2 Raptors (before the two $25 mail-in rebates and with S&H)
$2436.35

P.S. If/when i get a budget for this computer, if the above (with suggestions) is over my
budget, i will let you guys know exactly what my budget is. Also, please don't mention "the Nvidia cards are better or the AMD processers run games better"
I don't really care which is faster, i just go with what other people i know who have built gaming machines are using.

One final word,
on the areas with "Suggestions please", i don't know what to get and would like suggestions as to what you guys would use.

If you really don't have a price, you should ask Praetor what he thinks.

lol, i will then, also on the processer, doesn't the Prescott core run hot? would that be a problem at all?
I am not going to be doing any sort of overclocking on this computer in case anyone is wondering.

A good fan will solve that. The fan I chose, you can control the fan speed. And the case allows a temp display ... so if it starts getting hot just crank the fan to high :)

And, I'm pretty sure Praetor would go with Prescott over Northwood

To go Dual Layer or not? That is a big question for me, becasue if the price of D/L media is coming down then, which Dual Layer drive should i get?

I have a question, on the Raptor drives, it says "OEM, Drive Only" does that mean it doesn't come with the nessary cables?

ok upon further tweaking of my list, check the updated post and look at the Mobo, from what i can tell i can use it to run 2 Raptors in a RAID config with just the mobo (no RAID hardware needed, as it is contained on the mobo) as i want to run two 74GB Raptors as one (effectively creating a 148GB HDD)

Zipzoomfly is the old Googlegear, and is a good site, but, Newegg gets my business, most of the time.

I am pulling my hair out (lol) I have to get that graphic card :). The only bad things are:
ONE, I only want this card: http://shop.ati.com/product.asp?sku=2537962
As it is the ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition
and I do NOT want a third party version (i.e. Sapphire, Powercolor etc.)
and
TWO, I can't find it ANYWHERE.
Does ANYONE know where i can get it for $500 or less (before shipping)

lol,
http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/product.asp?dept%5Fid=&pid=9363&sid=405CGD9K9W8G9G4LCE5H3GG6HBBEDSL3
here it is but, a few things
1) Its OEM, i need the Retail pack as i need all cables, screws etc. to install it.

2) the price (because all the ATI fans want this card)
they are asking $800! The retail price is $499.

3)My friend built a computer a few weeks a go and he did MAJOR research on the PCI vs AGP cards and the AGP was better. The only bad thing, the places he bought his stuff (newegg, and zipzoomfly) are sold out and ZipZoom wants $599 for it (which i just might end up paying, just to get the F***ing card.

My most sincere recommendation would be to forget the X800XT. No card should cost or is worth that kind of money. In two months time I'm laying my money down for an nVidia 6800 GT which costs just under $400 and will give me 90% - 95% of the performance the X800XT will (ask Praetor if you don't believe me).

Save your $200 for beer and lapdances :)

Also, newegg is the way to go. I've built my current and last PC through them along with countless peripherals and have never been disappointed with them.

Definitely! $200 into the proc will give your system waaaay more benefit. If you're looking at Intel procs, the P4 3.6 Prescott has been looking very good and with the Thermaltake POLO 735 HSF that flip218 linked you heat won't be a problem. I've been running a POLO 735 for a few months now and it does a hellacious cooling job. My P4 3.06 never breaks 45ºC during encoding or intensive gaming :)

Does it really matter if the cards are branded ATI/Nvidia or something like Sapphire/PowerColor/Albatron etc? Because this is going to be a gaming machine and so if it will hurt my gaming proformance then i will just get the Nvidia or ATI (real) versions.
