I was just wondering if anybody has ever benchmarked an AMD processor that claims to run as well as an Intel processor with a higher actual clock speed. Like a 2800+ and a 2.8Ghz? I ask because I'm going to build a new computer and I don't really want to feed the beast that is Intel, but I don't want to sacrifice performance with AMD. If anybody has any info or any personal experiences please let me know.

amd speeds are about 80% of posted otherwords a 2800xp actually runs at about 2240mhz whereas intel speeds are actual speeds. it all depends on money & what you are going to do with computer will determine which way you go, amd or intel

i plan to use linux on the new computer and use it for real work like video transcoding and just for everyday use. i plan to use the one i have now mainly for games and any other of my windows only apps. the one ive got is already good enough to do that. as for money, i dont really know how much so any suggestion is a good one for now. if anyone could recommend some amds from a couple different price categories i could see just how much were talking about.

If your planing on doing video transcoding and you are going to run linux, I would say go with an AMD 64bit proccessor. You will not see any difference with windows but with a linux destro that was written for 64, you will see a speed increase. In Canada these are cheaper than the Intel 2.8 and 3Ghz that I would have recommended until you said linux. I usually am an Intel person until it comes to linux. Linux is done the way windows should be and you have a lot more options.

Why not? Some apps support AMD64

I live in the US. are the AMD64s cheap on canadian websites?
yeah, I'd hate to be stuck with windows and a 64 bit processor until xp 64bit edition comes out, if ever; so im definitely going with linux, finally.

Praetor,
I noticed you have the same processor I am looking at. I also see that you have overclocked it quite well. Is this processor fairly easy to overclock? Any info on that would be great.
Oh, and thanks for the link ianski7

is the stock cooling enough to keep from overheating? I plan to overclock this processor and I don't want that to happen.
oh and that motherboard looks great. it'll be a big step up from what I've got now.

that Kingwin liquid cooler looks good. my one question is: what are the other two radiators for?

You can put one on your Video card or Hard Drive or what ever you want to keep cool. Most people have problems installing the other radiators so they just use the one for the CPU. that cooler will lower the temp by 30 deg C... Very coooool

The best website I found for info is tomshardware.com. Pretty much all the benchmarks reflect that AMD beats the pants out of Intel for gaming, but, Intel is superior for encoding. Overall, the designation of speed that AMD uses means that their chip will compete with the corresponding Intel chip (2800+ vs. 2.8 ghz). I just built an AMD64 3400+ that rocks for gaming. Overall, I think that AMD is a better value for the money.

I would have expected something like that. But since most programs don't use 64 bit processing, and neither does Windows, AMD is the only choice for me, as they are the only ones with 64 bit processing. I have also heard time and time again that AMD is just better than Intel.

which would be better for mainly gaming purposes...AMD Athlon 64 3400+ or Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz. AMD being 754 socket, and Intel being 478. (not that socket would matter but...) Now I realise theres probably going to be some mixed oppinions, but I still would like to know.
CPU - AMD Athlon64 3200+
GPU - XFX GeForce 6600GT
RAM - 768mb
MB -ASRock 939 Dual-SATA2
HDD - Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm
LCD - 19" LCD SCEPTRE
