DVD Burners burning slow after installing Windows XP service pack 2

I installed Windows XP service pack 2 and since then one of my burners as been burning at a slower rate. It is a TSST Corp Burner an (OEM Samsung) I also have a Sony Dru 510 which is burning fine. I have several different software programs I use to burn with and all of them(Nero, Copy Pro and DVD Decreptor) but at have the speed they did before. When burning a movie using Copy Pro I did notice that the DMA is disabled so I checked on the IDE channels and found out that the secondary IDE channel device 0
the transfer mode was dma if available and the current transfer mode was PIO. Is there a way I can get my speed by without uninstalling Service Pack 2, I had to download it to get drivers for an 2.0 USB card I installed?

Uninstall SP2. That will fix it.
SP2 stuffs everything up. Just dont install it.

Uninstall the IDE controller that is displaying PIO mode.
Reboot and let XP reinstall the driver.
Then go back to device manager and check, it should be back to DMA.....................
And your burn speeds should be back upto speed..............

LOL, you have no teeth, I have no hair................
We could be called The Gummi Baldies..........LMAO.
Usually XP changes that mode when it has encountered several read errors, PIO is the slower data transfer rate and likewise it reduces the read speed in order to overcome reading issues.
Very common for the controller to become a little messed up, so keep this in mind should it occur again.
The uninstallation usually fixes that.

I joined this site to thank baabaa for a problem I have had in 2 PC`s with the same drive and totally due to a defective disc I had been trying to format causing Windows to change the access protocols with the drive.
THANKS M8
P.S. Can`t help but wonder how many people buy new burners due this problem or take up shop staff time with returns.

I think you will be right there.
I know several people who have burners etc, but are not on the internet - and what you describe is actually fairly common, with people I know anyway........................

-I did the deleting and rebooting trick, and my secondary IDE now reads "Ultra DMA mode 2."
-However, whenever I load an image in Nero 6.6.0.1, the program crashes.
Is there anything else I could do?

probably a mismatch between Nero and the image you try and load.
Provide some details:
What sort of image, and how was it created?
Has this happened with earlier versions of Nero?
Did this problem occur BEFORE installation of SP2 or after?

More detailed explanation:
-Before installing SP2, it took 7-10mins to burn a full DVD in Nero. I was able to burn, Nero .nrg images, CDRwin .cue/.bin files, and XBOX .iso files all with no problem.
-After installing SP2, all images still worked, but it now took 20+ mins to burn a full DVD in Nero.
-I did the DMA trick as suggested above, and now my Secondary IDE does read, "Ultra DMA mode 2" instead of PIO, but Nero crashs every time I try and load an image.
*I'm thinking of getting another burner, one with dual layer writing, and hoping this fixes the problem.
*else, I'm just going to go back to SP1.
*or hopefully somebody can give me a tip to get mine working with SP2.

Well, if it worked with SP1 then it is a conflict between SP2 and Nero.
I do not use Nero, but have heard that people have had issues with it when it comes to running SP2 aswell.
I don't know whether there is a resolve as of yet, but I am sure someone can jump in here and maybe point you towards a fix for it...................
Maybe worth just uninstalling SP2, back to SP1 to see if the crashing ceases - this would prove the conflict anyway............................
