@ iburndvds: i never bought a backup, but i used to sell them at school. *of course* the buyers assured me they owned the game/movie already, and seeing as i was charging them for the service of creating a backup of their original, i was in the legal clear. don't go doing that, though. :) it's not right...

Have you ever burned a disk for a friend or family member?

I burned a family member. Then I found out it was illegal.

AD is here to help people legally back up stuff they own. Piracy is not condoned as said before.

On a side note, I haven't been around on AD much for about 6 months but since I've been back I've noticed that the moderators don't seem to appreciate help anymore? I remember when a member would offer another member advice, letting them know about the rules the moderators would thank them. Now it's bad to let members know the rules? Excuse me if I'm wrong, but moderators do have all the powers but they can't do everything. They must need help sometimes. Just my two cents.

The reminding and enforcing of the rules is now left to the Moderators because some members were getting nasty about it. The "Report Offensive Post" feature was added so that a problem would be reported directly to us so we can take care of it. The rules have also been updated so anyone who hasn't been around for a while should take a look :)

Thanks for letting me know. I tried asking some other members who seemed active on the forums, but some said they didn't answer PMs? Oh well, whatever-I just wanted to know the reasoning for leaving the warnings/informative posts to the mods. Thanks again for clearing it up and I will check the rules to keep updated.

No worries :)

The offensive posts that get reported are taken care of fairly quickly.

@iburndvds: yeah i have, quite often. with a clean conscience because of my own personal views on fair use. still, laws are laws and when you talk about breaking them around here (which you shouldn't at all) you have to be very careful. Nephilim and the others are always watching, and you really only get one or two warnings, so we try to obey the rules about conversation.

THE DIGITAL MILLENNIUM COPYRIGHT ACT OF 1998 makes duplication of digital media for any purpose illegal. But because it seems to conflict with the old law people think it's a gray area and therefore ok. The DMCA makes it illegal to circumvent digital encryption. So if you have a DVD recorder that you can just slide a blank into and it copys that's fine. But, if there is a digital protection blocking reproduction, than via the DMCA (Thank Clinton for it), it is illegal to use any program to get around it.
That being said (and I'm sure up for debate). No one here really cares. As 99% (an educated guess) of the people on here are pirating. I read posts from people bragging how they are into the thousands on burns. (a) if you have the kind of money to own and burn 2000+ dvd's (avg $10 per DVD, .50 per DVD-R = well over $20k) Why would you care if 1 copy of Star Wars got a scratch? (B). If you are such a tard that treat your things with such disrespect and maladroit care that you absolutely have to have every single movie you own backed up, then you're probably going through a DVD burner every month.
And to the original post. Yes movies do come out over seas first sometimes. But not if it's an American movie. IE I had a legitimate copy of House of Flying Daggers weeks before it was even in the theatres in the states. Most that you'd order though are going to be the handycam versions though. There is one rental place I know that has a international license (so they say) and they'll rent the movies here (USA) that are out there (everywhere else) before they come out officially here (USA.. how's that for confusing?)
I'm sure I'll threats of bannedom and torture of the electrical variety for this post. But I'm not on a soap box preaching you people to stop. I make copies myself "OF MY OWN MOVIES TO BACK UP FOR MY PERSONAL ENJOYMENT" I think that's the allowable syntax.
But hey lets call an apple an apple, making copies of encypted DVDs breaks the law.

BTW, if you'd like to read it the DMCA can be found here:

that is still illegal.
you can make a backup for your personal use. you are not allowed to sell a backup or even give them away. wheather you are charging for your 'service' or not does not matter. you are still distributing copyrighted material that you dont own the copyright for.

We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried, most people were silent...

there's some way around the law; this i'm sure of as i've seen a few companies doing the same thing.

meh, what it all comes down to is, i got away with it, so it was legal to me at the time :)
