I am not very technically minded! However,I have successfully been downloading from Winmx for some time.During the last couple of weeks,I find I cant download CERTAIN titles.I wondered if there was any reason for this? This is my first visit, and I am not even sure I have posted correctly! lol Thanks for any help.

I have a similiar problem. I have been using WinMX for quite sometime now. Within the last month, only about 1 in every 40-50 users can download from me. I either get a "connection aborted" or "connection timed out" message. I tried the link listed above, but it didn't help me. I have not changed any settings and have also tried it with my firewall shut off. I have tried Primary and Secondary connections and have even went so far as to delete WinMX and reinstall it. No luck with anything.
I believe that it might have to do with my ISP, which is, and has always been Cox Cable. Does anyone know if Cox has changed anything? Or if I can do anything to fix this? Any help would definitely be appreciated. Thanks.

I too have been having the same issue with downloading. Yellow for a while and then red. And i've also noticed that all the usernames are in the same format... <name><number>_<number> all of them the same. Call me crazy but I think that this is a little odd. And all the names are something just off the wall like "sillychick" or "thugdogg." Aresgalaxy.org is the place to be. Downloaded Ares and now I can download again. Thanx Ares ;)

I had exactly the same problem like you. My WinMX abort 99% of my upload connection or timeout. It happened maybe in January. It just happened for no reason. I also have Cox Communication ISP. I went their website and found out some information about excess usage of bandwidth. If they think your bandwidth usage from previous months were too high, they can suspend and limit your outgoing bandwidth. I know someone works at Cox also. He said Cox will email you or send you a letter to notify you this situation, which I never got any of those.
You should call COX and find out.
Good luck

Has been around looking for others with the same problems as I experienced with WinMx. From have been working exelently with high speed, sometimes with 100+ kbs. Highest has been a whooping 450 kbs for a short period(yes its true!). One day I could get 120-130 kbs continuosly for 7 straight hours. One day it all stopped, for days I could get perhaps 60 or 70 megs of videofiles. What the he--- had happened?? But saw some folks that changed their portforwarding, so I did the same. Strange? It worked again. Is the problem then with my ISP who by some means suppressed the traffic on the previous ports? Uploads were suffering to but are no up to good speed again. By the way, someone had seen himself when browsing with WinMX, have experienced the same thing. Feels very odd ):0

WinMx files time out
I had the same problem. Go to this site & follow the instructions http://www.p2p-revolution.com/ The problem is that the system is loaded with fake files & fake users who will never connect. I clicked whois for these users & they all had 3000 files. Hum-m-m? Search by hash & you'll get the real file.

Here is a way to test this without installing anything - do the search in the corner of this web page for a common file. Copy the Hash (including the word "Hash>" into your WinMX search window. When you get hits, try downloading them. Please help by clicking the "About us" button & follow the directions to hash your files & upload the results. We need this database to be bigger.

If you are like I am and are lacking in the "technical skills" department, but at the same time, miss using WinMX at http://www.vladd44.com/mx/ , there is a quick, easy and free solution it is called MXPIE at http://www.MXPie.com . There is no spyware or anything else bundled with it. For those a little more savvy and courageous, there is even a manual option.

So come on back to WinMX, and download to your hearts content. Thanks to these updates, not even the power of the RIAA can stop a network.

IF you have downloaded WinMX and still cannot connect, you can even get personalized realtime help. Just go to this link WinMX Channels at http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6514 . Copy the Room name appropriate for your Language and paste it into your WinMX chat screen, then press the Join Button. This works on version 3.53 and up even if you are not connected. It allows you to join into chatrooms set up for you to get immediate help.

Everything you need at the MXPIE Website at http://www.MXPie.com . Free and Spyware free.

I have also found a site for solving Computer Problems at http://www.gemini777.net
that is nice, prompt and VERY helpful. If there is a problem you need an answer to, they can help.

Realtime help available for WinMX 3.53 users having trouble getting connected. Go to WinMx Channels at http://www.vladd44.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=6514 .

I've found that when I try to use Winmx through a charter cable connection I have similar problems to everyone else. It's also the same with Limewire and Shareaza. However, if I start Winmx on a dial-up connection, I get tons of results and I can download any song I want at top speed (atleast top speed for dial-up).

I called charter and talked to a supervisor as well as someone who was in charge of their security. They both denied that charter did any sort of port blocking or packet shaping.

After that I decided to give cable one more try and downloaded Ares, with their service I was finally able to download again. The problem is they don't have as good of a selection as Winmx.

I have to assume that if charter is telling the truth then there has to be something causing problems for Winmx on a broadband connection which doesn't affect Ares.

Charter does block p2p but if you click on my post where WinMX Channels is highlighted... you can get to V44 help rooms that will have people help you through unblocking your ports, router configuration or any WinMX problem you have.

I actually spent a few days trying some of those things before I called charter, but they didn't work for me. Also, if it's a case of blocking, why would Ares work? I was leaning more towards packet/traffic shaping software. That could be why certain p2p's are affected, while others aren't.

I've read there's no way to circumvent this. If the ISP is that committed, you just have to live with it or cancel. Hopefully, someone can figure out a solution like the encryption bittorrent uses.

Charter sure was adamant though about not blocking or shaping. They claimed they only took action if they were notified by the RIAA, and even then they would only send an email. The supervisor said "Why would we expect customers to pay for a product they couldn't use?"

I've yet to come up with an answer.

Alright, try to use WinMX ports TCP=60060 and UDP=60069 to bypass the Charter blocking for WinMX (remember to route these ports through your router if you have one) or come by Vladd44 Help Channel_C31ECEC91A23 listed in the WinMX Channels link above on JadeSnow's 1st post on this thread. On yr WinMX, hit WinMX Peer Networks, then copy and paste the room name Vladd44 Help Channel_C31ECEC91A23 on the black space right of Filter, then hit Join. There are people there to help you to get connected to WinMX and sort through any WinMX problems you have.

Ares is much smaller than WinMX (which is the 2nd most popular p2p after Kazaa). That is why most isps won't bother to block the smaller p2p networks like Ares. Btw, now that Limewire is having filter blocking of many songs (read here : http://register.limewire.com/filter/trunk/index.php)it would be a good idea to try out WinMX :)

Correct me if I'm wrong because I've gathered much of my info from forums, but a blocked port means you can't send or receive anything on that port? An ISP would have to block all the dynamic ports that are unassigned in order to be successful at stopping p2p in this way, otherwise they'd be chasing users from port to port. Ares defaults with ports in the 21xxx range, so even though they're smaller, wouldn't they be affected just as Winmx is by the blocking method?

However packet shaping as I understand it is much more sophisticated and allows the ISP to not block, but identify and suppress specific p2p servers to the point that the up/downloads turn green, trickle along at about 0.40k, and then time out, which is what happens when I connect to Winmx. I get lots of results and I know the files are real because I can turn off my cable modem and download it thru dial-up with no problems. I've also tried almost every port on the IANA list that isn't assigned and I'm not behind a router.

Is the packet/traffic shaping software an issue that the "Vladd44 Help Channel" addresses, because I honestly think that is the cause of the problems a lot of users are having, and they probably don't realize it?

(soapbox)
I know that ISP's usually have a clause in their contract that states they can pretty much do anything they want, but maybe that shouldn't be the norm'. There has to be some gaurantee of service. Whether they're blocking, capping, or shaping. From a legal standpoint, file sharing isn't illegal, only sharing copywritten files is perceived as a violation. And there aren't any regulations that make ISP's responsible for that activity. I don't agree with but I can understand being capped, but I can't understand how they benefit from blocking or shaping.
