Hello all.

I just recently purchased a Plextor 712A DVD drive from tigerdirect. I read great reviews for it online that influenced my purchase, yet I have been having problems with it since day one. I use dvd decrypter, dvd2one, and nero to try and backup my dvds. However, I have only made about 4 successful backups out of about 12. What puzzles me is the inconsistency. I figure if its broke, it wouldnt work at all. I have browsed a lot of topics on here to try and find a solution but have yet to find one that works.

I am running Windows XP on a Pentium 4 2.0 GHz machine with 256MB of RAM. The version of Nero I have is 6.0. I have gotten some different errors but the most popular one is "could not perform Disc-at-once". I have read on here that Memorex dvds are not good to use so I tried switching the brand of media I am using (borrowed an Imation one from a friend) and I get the same error.

I hope someone can help because I need to know if I should return this drive.

Thanks

Have you tried using Shrink with DVD Decrypter.I use a Plextor 712 and have never had a problem with this combo. The disc at once error sounds like you may have a setting wrong in one of the programs. You might want to go to the Plextor site and make sure you have the latest firmware for your drive. Also are you having trouble only with dvd's,can you burn cd's ok.I have never used dvd2one so I can't help there.Did you replace a drive with the Plextor, or add it to your system already using another drive.some more info would be helpful.Have you seen this guide for burning with Nero

Thanks for the reply.

To answer your questions...

I have never used Shrink and I downloaded it today and will give it a try. I have the latest firmware (1.05) for my drive. I have used decrypter and DVD2One on several of my friends computers and never had an issue. I replaced my Liteon 40X cd-burner with the Plextor. The burner was connected to the SLAVE position at factory. Thinking this might be the problem I now moved it to the MASTER position on the cable select and moved my liteon 16X DVD drive to the SLAVE. This didnt help.

You also reminded me that when I did try to burn an audio cd with Nero I got a write error as well. I then used Roxio and it worked. I agree with you and think that there must be a wrong setting somewhere but I have no clue where because I didnt change anything to my knowledge. I looked at the guide you recommended and I had been following the procedure correctly before hand.

Are there any specific settings I should check for in Nero? This is confusing because I did get about 4 successful burns.

Thanks again.

Two things to try would be to update Nero to it's latest version since the early versions were known to be buggy and try decent media - both Memorex and Imation mostly use junk media. Both Verbatim DataLifePlus and Maxell can be found in most stores and RiDATA or Taiyo Yuden can be ordered online :)

Did you check your settings in Windows Device manager after swapping drives? Are you using Roxio as well as Nero!I used to have issues with Roxio and have since uninstalled from my system.

Yes I checked the settings in the device manager and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary. Yes, I have both Roxio and Nero on my machine. Roxio came with my computer and I installed Nero myself. I have never had any issues with Roxio.

Thanks for the suggestion though

Hi TSK121,

Did you upgrade to Nero 6.3.1.25 or Nero 6.6.0.1 to see if this resolved your issue? We did have issues of this type with the older version of Nero 6.0, and an upgrade should address it if its our software.

If you still have issues, try going to the Recorders Options window and disable 'DVD High Compatibility Mode' and see if this helps any.

Well I upgraded Nero..and it still does not work. I must say that frustration is beginning to set in. However, I did read the recommended media list on Plextors site and the brand of dvds I was using wasnt even on there. Hopefully this might be the problem. I am still gladly taking suggestions.

Thank all of you who have gave suggestions

Well, I went out to the store and bought a 3 pack of Maxell DVD+R's. It didnt work either :(. I then went and switched off the DVD high compatibility mode and it actually started burning but failed around 28%. I think I am gonna give up and send it back.

I performed the self diagnostics test and it failed. I called tech support at Plextor and they agreed that it is a defective drive. I am now in the process of returning it to tigerdirect.

Thanks everyone for their help.

Get rid of roxio, it is a terrible piece of software & has conflicts with nero & just about every other piece of software on the planet. I would say most people on this forum do not like roxio. I would like to napalm the factory & have the software writers lined up against a wall and shot, or berated, whichever is the best!

Hey I just got a quick question about that Plextor drive. I have been thinking about getting one. Don't really know why I just keep reading everywhere that they are the best thing since sliced bread. Then the more I read threw AD I get a little skeptical there seem s to be a few bugs with these things? Are they all they are cracked up to be? I mean do I really have to worry about which type of media I burn it? I have thrown just about every type of cheap, no name, top of the line, Name brand Media you can think of in my NEC 2500A and my older Pioneer DVR105 and never had a problem with any of them. So I'm just trying to convince myself why I need to buy one of these. Someone, anyone help me out here please.

my plextor works awesome.. i end up repeating myself in these forums a million times but shitty media sucks,. it doesnt matter what kind of burner you have, if you have crap media you will eventually get skips and errors, but you wont even notice until you try and watch it all the way through. It usually still says successful burn, but its not. stick with good media, it doesnt even cost that much more.. only like 5 cents more. new prodisc 8x inkjet dvd-r's were rated top quality, as well as ty and ritek as always.

I too, had problems with a Plextor 712A.
Went to Taiyo Yuden media and it seemed to work fine.
Verbatim media also works great.

I did install W2K again, and then all media (except Dupsonic cheapie) worked at 8X again.....until I installed Pinnacle Instant Copy's Instant Drive...all went to crap. Uninstalled, still crap. finally went to control panel/hardware and uninstalled VOB instant drive, and all is well again.

If you're having problems with the Plextor, try another drive....I did, still had burning problems, knew then it might be my machine or software.

Good Luck.

I have a Plextor 712A and have absolutely no problems. Using Ritek DVD-/+ R's and Fuji DVD+R which are actually Taiyo Yuden and they record at 12X. For DVD copying I use CloneDVD 2 exclusively. It works flawlessly. Have tried Nero 6 and Shrink DVD. I find I get more consistant results with CloneDVD 2 and the quality is just as good.

I did finally find the root of my problems with my Plextor (actually my installed programs): VOB Instant Drive - part of Pinnacle Instant Copy. After I uninstalled it from IC and removed the device in Control Panel, I'm burning with CloneDVD, Nero at 8X on ProDisc, Shop4Tech, Verbatim DVD-Rs and 12X on Taiyo Yuden DVD+Rs with reliable results. The only media that has complained were the counterfeit Taiyo Yudens labelled by Dupsonic - They'll only burn at 2X and get to the end of the disc.

Still, if you have a problem, email Plextor: They do have excellent tech support, and worked with me through this. I actually believed one week ago that I had a load of bad media. That turns out to not be the case. The only thing that seemed to bring this out is the Plextor's speed when burning - faster burn speeds really show if your machine is having problems.
