Hi every body i was just wondering if an external hd was just as fast as internal hd?

It depends, you didn't say what technology you was using. An external SCSI drive is just as fast as an internal. Firewire is probably about 10% slower than an internal IDE drive. USB HiSpeed is generally slower than Firewire and USB isn't even close to internal speeds.

More than likely the answer to your question is that internal is faster than external. It's a litte confusing to look at the specs. You would see that IDE is rated for 133mps bus and USB HiSpeed is 480mps and think that USB was faster, but in reality the IDE interface operates in parallel where the USB is serial. The parallel interface will transfer more data even at a slower bus speed. Also in real world tests, USB HiSpeed devices usually only get about 300mps throughput even though the interface specification states 480. The older USB standard is only 12mps.
