Have you tried enabling DMA on your burner?

Yes you do need to put your writer on DMA mode.
What type of media are you using + or - R's?
What speed are you burning the movie at?

So if I am understanding you right this is the first and only time you had this problem?

If so don't worry about it S*&T Happens. Try another disk and see if it happens again. Could have just been a bad disk as I said it hapens. :-)

What do you mean "other dvds"? Originals or other backups?

i've created about 5 or 6 coaster each trying something different. this is the first time i've had this type of problem. i've worked through other problems before. the dvd's that do work are both burned backups and regular dvds. the ones that dont work are recent ones i've made. when i put these in the computer it either freezes up or says something about lowereing my screen resolution or color depth. when i put them in the standalone they sometimes work - mostly just play the FBI warnings, etc. or sometimes they play fine - it's all seemingly very random. how do i enable the DMA or whatever?

Changing Drives From PIO Mode to DMA

If the drive is not burning at the maximum speed, the IDE Controller the drive is attached to may be set to PIO mode and needs to be set to DMA.

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1. Open Device Manager.

2. Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3. Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4. In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

? Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.

? Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

But I dont think this is your problem. It should be set on DMA but you said everthing seems to be working fine the movies just aren't playing right? It sounds more and more like a media issue. You could have a bad batch of disk's. Run one of those blank DVD's threw Nero Info Tool and let us know what you get?

Under Disk Tab "Manufacturer ID"?
Under "Configuration" are all your drives on DMA?
What do you have under "ASPI"

Thanks,

I.m sorry to say but this one has me stumped. :-(

Media is top of line so that shouldnt be an issue.

Is this just happening with one movie you are backing up? If so it may not have ripped to your HD correctly and you could try ripping it again. This sometimes happen ecspesially if you are using Decrypter and tell it to ignor read error's. It will always be kind of hit or miss if you do this.

I really don't know where else the problem could be, but I'm sure someone here would know. PLEASE HELP :-)

Good luck,

I'm not sure if it means anything because you also said earlier

So it sounds like your friends drive is just better equiped to read threw error's because your disks arent playing on your stand alone DVD player. Have you tried them in another stand alone player? Also I will ask again is it just one movie or several that do this? It could also be something as stupid as your screen resolution if your video card isn't very good. Try lowering your settings to 800x600 and 16 bit I had someone else do this and it actually worked for them, but they had a very generic video card. Most DVD software players recommend that setting anyway.

Oh yeah one more thing you shouldnt double post http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/133456
It is against the rule's. Just a little friendly advise. :-) (they hate it when you do that) LOL

Right Flip ;-)

ok. to answer your question - no it's happpened to more than one movie i backed up.
take for instance when i backed up "behind enemy lines" it worked in my friends computer fine. it froze my computer up. and in the standalone it struggled to play the movie (i had to repeatedly take it out of the drive and try again). i've never had a screen resolution problem before - is it common for the computer to all of the sudden just not accept a dvd or something? I appreciate all the help and the advice too! Thanks, lets try to get this figured out.

Here is another very simple question, and could be the root of your problem what speed do you burn your disk's at? The log you posted shows x2 is this correct?

Also if you have a different brand of media give that a try. It could be your drive just dosent like that media. But if you updated your firmware that could fix that problem :-)

Can you browse the DVD threw explorer?

i tried lowering the screen res. to 800X600 and nothing changed, same with another standalone. I do burn at 2X because thats as fast as my burner goes sadly. Unfortunatly i dont have any other blank media to test. I am able to search through explorer. i'll try burning another disc at 1X and see what happens.

It is more common in laptop drives. I have worked on and built computers for 14 years, and yes laptop drives are very buggy.

That link I supplied earlier for a driver is for a USB external drive so it isnt going to help, and I can't find anything on that being an internal drive anywhere??
