New dvd rw is driving me nuts

I just bought a nec dvd rw ND-3500AG and I had a friend installed it (he did his own and it worked fine) So i went through the steps and it shows that it is beginning to install and then there is an error. On my device managaer there is a yellow ! point next to that and my original dvd drive. I cant get either to work. I checked what the problem was and it is code 41 and I tried to remedy it but it wont work. Can someone please help. Thanks for any help.
