what kind of device do i need to hook up more than 1 comp to a printer

depends on whether printer is usb or parallel. if usb get an usb hub. if parallel you can use a switch box or a hub that both pcs connect to than to printer. now if both computers are on the net with cable than get a router, hook the printer to 1 pc & set up network with printer sharing

i have usb, and how does the hub work exactly is it like a router but for usb devices?

yes, i have a customer with 2 computers(his & hers) connected to a usb hub for the net & they share 2 printers, a usb hp all in one on his & a hp laserjet4 on hers
