VirtualDub problem while compressing wav2mp3

Hi
I've used DVD2AVI 1.85 to rip a DVD and it worked fine. But when i try to multiplex AVI and WAV file with VirtualDub, if i set audio compressing to mpeg-3 the process stop after 1 sec. Finally i multiplex the file with audio set to direct stream copy and get a file of over 1.7 Gb.
Has anyone already had problems while compressing audio to mpeg-3 with VirtualDub ?
Is there any alternative (other soft) ?
Thanx for answering me and hopefully helping me out.
