go with either amd or intel cpu BUT don't get a name brand machine get a clone as you can upgrade better. get 512meg of ram, 80+ gig harddrive prefer maxtor, 128 to 256 meg videocard either ATI or Nvidia, dvd burner, case fans to push air thru case. on old computer download ad-aware se from lavasoft to get rid of spyware which is probably slowing down system

www.ibuypower.com sells some nice machines . i have purchased three machine from this company and all have been great .
my personal machines are hand built by myself as i get all the nice parts that i want this way .
have you thought about maybe just upgrading what you have ? you can save a bunch of cash if you go this route .

I'd agree with ddp here. Newegg is probably the best place for you to go. They have an excellent staff that, I'm not sure will help you out with any technical questions, but will definitely help you in any way they can. Plus, if you accidentally break something they're probably going to be your best bet for returning it.

95% of the time they're super fast in shipping.

I once overnighted a few memory sticks, case and a hard drive and it took almost 5 days to get here, due to getting lost somewhere in Tennessee. Newegg bitched at fed ex and fed ex called me personally to apologize. Then newegg (or fedex) refunded my total shipping costs and gave me a 10% off coupon.

Great service Newegg has. I'd go with them all the way.

Hey

For your old computer

Have a read of the first post of this thread:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/128251

Post your HiJackThis log here and ill have a look at it for you, and see if i can see anything that will be slowing down your PC. Just run all the programs first then post.

From what i have heard, Newegg are suppose to be good (i dont live in US).

For a gaming machine, AMD processors are recommended, and 512mb RAM MINIMUM. These days 120G hard drives are coming common in computers.
As for Graphics, a 128mb MIGHT do, but if your parents are paying might as well go for the 256mb (*wink* *wink*) hehe

Have they set a budget for this PC, as in the max they will pay, people may beable to point you in the right direction then.

If you want a quick PC, I would get a 10,000rpm HD (Western Digital make a stonking one), get the fastest processor you can, I would go for the 64bit Athlon & 400DDR RAM (at least 512 better still 1gig) A 6800 Nvidia card should round it off.
My mate has this set up, Far Cry & Doom3 absolutely kicks ass!
