howto get a disc to play in old toshiba sd-2006?

i tried to get dvd-r's to play in this Toshiba DVD SD-2006 and NADA, i tried to get a SVCD to play on it, NADA. said either No Disc, or Please intsert disc, or the likes. Will not recognize the disc. these discs played in other dvds. Is there a specific method i should be taking to get a dvd to play on older ntsc dvd playters like this one or am i flat out screwed if trying to get one to work on that player? I am using c-mags currently

Please no suggestions to "try" a dvd+r or a better media, i would rather hear that a dvd+r or better media "will probably work", dont have money to waste and have too many frisbees that will be thrown as far as the eye can see soon, lol, Catch!
