sorry guys having some computer problems.

im building a new computer and this is what i got for it:

intel pentium 4 3.0ghz HT
Maxtor 80gig ultra ata hard drive
Ati Radeon X700
2x512mb Corsair DDR DIMM ram
Asus P5GD1 (motherboard)

so me and my friend put it all together today but the power wire that connects the motherboard to the power supply only has 20 pins where my motherboard has 24 pins.

now heres the problem...the 20 pin wire fits in but theres a 2x2 slot thats extra...we first tried to see if it would work and the computer did turn on but would shut down. but the thing is it would shut down randomly. like sometimes itll stay on for 2 min or 5 min or sometimes like 10 seconds. we checked all the connections, hard drive, and memory and everything was fine. So we figured it must be the power wire. So i went out to frys to pick up a converter that converted the 20 pin wire to a 24 pin wire and tried it taht way. Then we got a message saying my processor was overclocking itself but then the thing is it couldnt be because you would have to change that in the bios and it doesnt even give us enough time to get into the bios. So what we are thinking is that the power supply we have doesnt match my motherboard. Tomorrow we are going to try a power supply that supports the 915 chipset which is the type my board is and see if that solves the problem.

I was just wondering if you guys think that really is the problem? or if i did something wrong...like my power supply isnt adequate.

o btw my power supply puts out 350watts and its an antec.

its your motherboard causing problem as it uses a non standard atx powersupply, your the second person i've come across on the net with that problem. make certain new psu has same # of pins as board & hopefully did no damage to board with old psu
