I just installed a new IOMagic 8x drive on my relatively new Dell P4...I have XP SP2 and another dvd reader drive installed so this a second drive. I tried writting to the disc (tried several different discs) and got the following issue:

I have the same drive and am getting was getting MEDIUM ERROR: POWER CALIBRATION AREA ERRORs. I'm running XP SP2. Used i/o magic's online chat and talked w/ ALEX (twice), told me to update my system with aspi_v471.exe (its a layer fix) no longer have that problem, now, my problem is the same as yours: HARDWARE ERRORS: TRACKING SERVO FAILURES. ALEX told me to update my DVD firmware with i/o magic's 150I.exe the DVD burner firmware update. I'm still getting coasters :( and will chat w/ ALEX tomorrow (the third time) wish me luck. I'm up to 7 coasters!
I installed an I/O magic dvdrw ide 1008 (a BTC drive)
on my Dell 4550 last summer. Problem I have is that it writes and plays fine in the drive, but it won't play later chapters of movie in the TV player. Same problem with various media. I tried on-line chat and got tired of waiting. No email address for support from I/O magic. Think that this is a cheap drive mfg or integrator and will look for another drive this summer. The firmware
update for the 8x BTC drive is 0159 on the I/O magic
site. Wonder who made your drive. If you can get
your money back, that is probably the best course of
action. I also have XP and SP2 without problems
and use Nero 5.5 with latest update (this helped.)
Decrypter and Shrink work fine as well. Have used
TEON and Philips DVD media. Other than the problem
mentioned above, drive has worked well.
Did some more testing and it is not the drive. Drive works well and has since the start. The problem is the media. Yesterday I did a back up on Verbatim media and the later chapters of a movie played fine. It is either a bad batch from Philips and Teon or they both are inferior media (Dye doesn't hold up for the last 3/8 inch
on the disc). So for now happy with drive and Verbatim media.
Hey, Im new to DVD burnin & just got the same drive. Have only made coasters so far. Using Decrypter/Shrink to rip/burn. Any help before I rip this drive outta here...would help.
BTC is one of the companies I/O Magic uses for the drive manufacture. Supposed to be fairly good. I have the single-layer 8x drive. Use the iso read part of Decrypter to see the manufacturer of the disc. Forgot the
name of the place that rates media, but if you look on
the UPC code of Maxell, it will tell you if it is made
in Japan - which is more of a guarantee that the media
is good. You could use Decrypter in IFO mode and then
also try Clone2DVD which will also write. The guides on
all of this are somewhere on this site. Keep trying,
but with the best media you can find.
