I just purchased an iomagic 16x dual write dvd burner, which came with Nero OEM, but am having problems writing to a DVD. I have been reading a lot of the posts on this site about external burners and the problems people are having with them. I dont really know what solution I can start with first. A lot of people are having the issue with the error "scsi command aborted". Luckily I have not encountered this problem. While tryin to write a single file to a DVD, nero passes the simulation test successfully, but then fails to burn. I get the message, "failed to write at 4x". I am using Sony DVD-R's made in Japan, so i know they are of good quality made by MCC. I have had the same issue with Memorex and Compusa store brand. I know the latter 2 are horrible media, and so i bought the sony today thinking the problem was the media. Apparently it isn't. I am using Nero version 6.3.1.18 and firmware version B7C9 for my writer. Any information will be helpful; i dont know where to start. Below is my recent log info from my latest attempt at a burn:

One of the more common mistakes people make with USB external drives is trying to get it to work on a USB 1 port. A dvd burner drive has to have USB 2 ports to work. The data transfer on USB 1 is way too slow for dvd burning. This is just a guess and something for you to check.

hey Jerry thanks for the response. I indeed have usb 2.0 ports on my computer. I just updated my firmware, updated the aspi layer, and reinstalled Nero, but no luck. Now I am getting the common scsi command aborted error when trying to burn. Any help?

I dont use Nero, but this looks like part of the problem.

Is the problem with your burner itself? Like you can't get the actual burner to be detected or is it that it wont let you copy one of your ORIGINAL DVD discs? If that is the case then you need to get a DVD region free program. Basiclly all this does is bypasses the copy protection put on almost all american DVDs. If this is not your problem then I don't know what to tell you other than I would of gone with internal but you gotta go with what you have so....

I have the Internal I/O Magic DVD+-rw/+- - used DVD Decrypter to remove region (and all other encryption) - created a hard drive image - used DVD Shrink with deep analysis and used shrink's plug-in to burn directly to Disk with Nero and got the same error message.
XP Pro SP1 - Nero came with my drive and I got all Nero's updates. - Used latest version of Decrypter and Shrink.

Hello bad 16. You said those sony -4x's with the sony 04d1 code were made in japan. I have a spindle of them sitting right here and they are made in taiwan. Dvd identifier lists them as 04d1.

I also have the iomega 16x and my pc recognizes it as a benq 1610 and Nero says it's a benq 1620. I also burn with Nero 6.0.0.22 oem.

My burner burns everything I slap in it,mainly + format. The only problems I had were that 1 spindle of sony -4x's had a few problems playing on a couple stand alone players.

Like rroettger stated, it cannot booktype a dvd-r

Try some some + format discs. The sony +1-8x's I have are coded sony D11 and these are definitely made in Japan. My burner can do these at 16x if I don't double check my burn settings. Also the verbatim +8x,made in japan, with the code of mcc003 are far superior on my benq. They let me burn at 12x if I don't double check them also.

Hey Bad16,

I got the exact same problem as you did in your original posting. I got a benq 1620 dvd burner and using memorex dvd-r and Nero 6 ultra. Tried to burn 6 dvd-r and no luck same error with "failed to write at 4x".
Did you get the problem resolved, I would appreciate your advise!
Thanks, Aggies

The problem seems to be a combination of burner using Nero for DVD-R media. My 16x MicroAdvantage drive get about 50% failure with DVD-R with the following log. But never has problem with DVD+R (~20 disc).

Hey Jimlii, what brand are those - "dash" discs are you using?

Usually different manufacturers even if you are using the same brand and quantity: example-maxell. The -4x's are coded,ritekgo4,mxlrg-02,and tygo1. Now you take the same maxell +4x's that sit next to the -4x's,in the same quantity packaging and nearly identical wrapping, these code as ricohjpn-01. Quite a bit of quality difference, but not a huge amount. The same can be said about the other brand names, but their quality level difference can be enormous.Memorex is a classic example, one batch prodiscs and next batch c-mags. Very huge difference.

If you want to burn - format, try maxell -4x yellowtops. If your burner can tolerate them, they are excellent to super quality. They are the only - format media I use.I burn an lot of + media because my other pc burner and tv home burner are + only.
