I see on here a lot that you need a USB 2 with an external burner. Where do you check to find out if it is a 2 or a 1?

Open your Device Manager and expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section. You should have at least one Enhanced USB2 host controller present.

Will I have to open the properties of it to find that? Or will it say that as the main description?

This is how I get to my device manager...There are probably faster ways.

Start

Right Click on "My Computer", select Propertys from the menu. This opens the System Properties window.

Click the Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager button.

Find "Universal Serial Bus controllers" on the list, mine is near the bottom of the list.

Click on the + to expand it. You should be able to find any USB 2.0 ports. I have this entry:

Intel(R) 8280 1EB USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24DD

I also have a bunch of other "USB Universal Host Controllers" listed but as far as I know, all my USB ports are 2.0.

Most if not all USB 2 devices are backwards compatible with USB 1 enabled mobos. You'll be able to use your device but it'll run a bit slower.

Even though you can use USB 1.1, it is not a very good idea to hook a burner up to it. You usually end up with buffer underrun problems. You just can't get the data across the port fast enough.
