hi,

I have Toshiba 5205-S703 with DVD Burner (model #SD-R6012). I have been burning dvd's for a long time, with no or minor problems. I had been using dvd-r's (tdk and maxell) Recently I have been receiving a message that the dvd I have just burnt is blank. This occured the first time while i was trying to burn dvd video files (using nero and copytodvd). dvd burning process was normal, after it had been finished, I would try to see if it were succesful but I'd get the message that I'd just inserted blank media!. After wasting several dvd's trying to burn both video or data, I bought a dvd-rw, to see what's going to happen. This time, after burning data, dvd becomes inaccesible. I can still read dvd's, and burn cd's. the dvd's I burnt prior to this problem still work fine too. I'm getting really frustrated. Please help!!!

I suspect a dirty lense.

thanks to your response, but it doesn't seem to be the problem. I bought a cleaner cd and cleaned it twice with it already... no change. any other thoughts?

by the way, the dvd-rw I used was memorex and I got an error message saying the dvd could not be burned successfully, this time (3 write errors) and when I try to erase this disc, copytodvd or Nero cannot recognize the media.

Unfortunately if your laser is particularly dirty then a lens cleaner is not going to do the job.

Best way to clean the lens would be directly but this is not really an option with DVD-Roms units.

I suspect if you have tried different types of media that your burner may be on it way out as a similiar thing started happening to mine.

That's what I'd suspected. But I can still burn CD's. Is this normal??

one last question... I've managed to burn a DVD with a 700MB divx file. I was just curious to see if it worked if I didn't use the whole capacity. and it did. any thoughts?

perhaps you are burning the media at a higher speed than it is rated for?

I can only burn @ 1X and I'm pretty sure I've been using that setting all along. But I'll check again.

From the looks of it, something is wrong with your installation. You could try reinstalling it. Oh and you should always enable overburn. Also, are you sure your ASPI layer is working right? You can check with Nero InfoTool.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled copytodvd and Nero. I tried burning a dvd with copytodvd. again i ended up with a coaster. i think the problem occurs at finalizing. i get about 4 write errors at the end. the dvd becomes unreadable. could this be a hardware problem? a dirty laser as discussed before?

Interesting...I would have thought that you might be using ISOs and there was a problem with them, but I just don't know. Are you sure the files don't exceed the disc capacity? Also, by data, do you mean the PC-Friendly stuff, or something else?

i don't try to burn more than 4.3gb. most of the times i've tried, it was even less. and yes both data and video files are pc-friendly, I guess. since I had no problem before (burning or accessing the burned dvd's) . this problem started very recently and i can burn data up to 2GB with no problem, but no luck with 4GB or a full dvd video file, around 4.1GB. I guess, as mentioned before, my dvd burner is dying slowly. I'll give it another shot with Nero and if it doesn't work I'll stop wasting my blank dvds and get a new burner.

It could be that your laser rails are screwed up after the point where its done writing 2GB. Yes, I believe your burner is in it's deathbed.

up to now, i had the same problem with 3 different software. last night, miraculously, nero worked and i managed to burn a video dvd. i'll give it another try, tonight to see what happens. i still don't know what the main issue was. i re-installed software, all 3 of them, blew some canned air into the dvd slot, tried different media, etc. nothing worked. then all of a sudden, it worked... ? anyway, thank you all for your help. I hope the problem doesn't persist. (I read somewhere that cigarette smoke damages the laser, is that true?)

thanks again
