I have recently started to use the demo version of this and it looks very promising.
I can't work out though why it is so expensive, is it because it is a niche market and the volume of sales are therefore low?
Is it because it's a specialist market that is wealthy and therefore they can charge what they like?

It seems a pretty simple program so It can't have taken that long to code, maybe I'm wrong, any programmers out there care to put me right?

It is not a simple program to do, basic MPEG-2 encoding might be relatively easy to do by using existing reference material, but tweaking the encoding algorithms so that it produces better quality than other MPEG-2 encoders is helluva difficult process to do.

Think about MP3 encoders, which involve much less tweaking compared to video, and think how long it has taken to get from the quality of the original l3enc back in 1996 to the current level of LAME -- and still maintaining the format exactly the same (so, there are NO improvements in the format itself, since this is not allowed, but the encoders' capabilities to work within the format have just increased dramatically).

And yes, the video encoding niche is very, very, very wealthy -- movie studios, etcetc. Even a hobbyist who makes his own movies, has to buy a decent film camera or if using lower budget, a decent semi-pro digital camcorder that costs at least $4,000 in any case (no, those that your local Wal-Mart sells, aren't semi-pro camcorders :-) and add all sorts of other stuff on top of this -- Adobe Premiere, DVD authoring tools, DVD writers, etc.. The price of ~$2,000 is relatively low in this bunch.

Summa summarum: they didn't indent the tool to be used by 31337 h4x0r$ who make copies of their DVDs :-)
