I can rip and burn movies hassle-free if I turn off the file compression option. If I leave it on, the PC hangs after about 4 minutes.

This happens regardless of what program I am using to rip or burn.

As a side note, this also happens during back-ups. Compression on, it hangs. Compression off, all is well.
I split the movies over two discs.

I also had a problem using anti-virus. If I scanned a compressed file, the system froze. If I told it to skip compressed files, it ran fine.

I am running XP with SVC Pack 2 installed. 256 MB RAM. Intel Celeron. Everything is new. I built it myself, but maybe there is a hardware setting somewhere I need to check.

There are no "error logs" to check because the system freezes before anything can be written.

Help!!

Thanks for your help.
