have a look at this story from tecchanel http://www.tecchannel.de/hardware/817/6.html it refers to instability issues with pci via industries chipsets it describes problems transfering large amounts of data eg. trying to burn to an external source. in some chip sets hangs and chrashes occur. there are 2 patches detailed. the first is from a guy called george breese (unofficial) the second is an official patch from via. the links in the report may be dead but it should give u some ammo when searching in google. google is where i first came across this latency problem. good luck. let us know if u find any thing
