Try googling "dvd burner firmware" if you're looking for hacked firmware, e.g. riplocks, etc. Otherwise:

NEC and other firmware can be found here:

Yeah, best bet is to do what laddyboy recommends; search the internet using your favorite search engine; ie: just loaded firmware for my dvd burner; did a google on sony dvd firmware updates; found the site within the first try. good luck and be careful; may want to set a restore checkpoint to be safe if using windows xp.

I guess I thought I saw NEC in the original question. Must have been the reply I saw.

I thought that once you flashed to the new firmware there IS no going back. Risky with hacked firmware.

There's a program called Live Update that searches for your dvd drive and finds the correct update for your burner. It then updates it for you If you want it to. A Goolge search will find this for you.

rroettger: You can reflash the original firmware in most cases as long as you have downloaded that as well. Search the forums at the usual sites to see what people are flashing and how it's working before you flash if that's a concern. Also if hacked firmware makes one nervous, only flash the official firmware updates.

Just another note'
Setting a restore point is usless when talking about firmware because you are actually writing to a chip (Bios) in your ROM drive. The only way back is to actually re-flash your drive with the Firmware from the manufacturer. Beware sometimes that dosent work either.

If you have an emprex burner this is the best place for firmware and bitsetting utility.

It also shows a chart for media compatibility.

I doubt I will ever have the chance to update my burner. It is a Dell OEM from LG. I am not worried, it is dependable and has never given me any trouble.
I was just trying to ponit out there may be no going back.
