Warren - you have a pretty decent system, you don't need an upgrade.

Your problem is the USB DVD burner - trust me.

Try a 1x burn and let me know how it is.

WarrenC: Hey, I retract my statement about upgrading your box. You have plenty of HP. I thought you had a PII or PIII with a really full hard drive and minimal amt. of memory. I'd re-focus on one application rather than trying all of them. Can you concentrate on a Decrypter and Shrink test for us? Or, try DVD X COPY without trying to copy the entire disk; ie: uncheck the box and try a test for me doing that. Let's try that before suggesting to punt the external drive and going with a Plextor 712 internal. That is what I am running on my box using DVD X COPY and it runs flawflessly. However, I do not have all the other sfw installed like you do; I do disable the majority of apps running when I do my copy. I can copy within 45-50 minutes to do the full read and full write. Keep us posted.

To make sure that a program running in the background isn't the problem try this:

Start
Run
Type in: msconfig
Click: OK
Click: Startup Tab
Click: Disable All
Click: OK
Click: restart

Now you have cleared any program that might be a cause.

When your PC starts back up, make sure you leave the settings that way they are and try another burn.

If you get the same results you now know that it wasn?t a program running in the background causing the problem.

You can reverse the disable by doing the same thing above, but this time click enable all and then OK.

WarrenC -- do what ScubaBud suggests and try the next burn(s) with a dvd-rw or dvd+rw also, to narrow down the media from a +r to a -r to a +rw or a -rw. I've received varying results and positive results with +rw using DVD X COPY.

Thanks.

IMO skips in burned dvd's or cd's that otherwise play all the way thru are caused by I/O interference. So I think you're on the right track in identifying programs and/or fragmented drive structure that would lead to them. Good luck and keep us posted.

Sorry it took so long to post my newest results. Some stupid thing called work got in the way. Anyways, I defragged my hard drive again, disabled all at startup using msconfig, bought some Maxell DVD-r-MXLRG02 and burnt at 1X. Had one pause in the middle of the movie (Walking Tall). During the closing credits I told my wife it looks like things are getting better and before I had a chance to finish, I got one more pause.

Now what!

Next attempt will have me totally uninstalling Norton's, cause even with all I've done, I still think it's lurking in the background. Occasionally I get messages saying the integrity of the product can't be verified.

If you got filemon.exe from a post of mine prior, it will let you know for sure ANY program that might be running in the background.

Also I found this thread about external writer's and problems they have. You are not the only one.

Do you have access to another DVD player? Try to run your new disk on it. Humor me

I was so ugly when I was a kid, my parents used to take me everywhere just so they wouldn't have to kiss me goodbye.

Tried the same movie (Walking Tall) on our other DVD machiine, and although it doesn't pause, the picture sort
of "cracks" at the top of the screen.
