I would like to transfer vhs to dvd the only problem is I have no idea where to start or what I'll need. I'd like to improve the picture quality is there any way to do that and what do I need to do everything?

First you need to "capture" the vhs on to your hard drive. There are several capture devices out there that will allow you to capture your vhs to dvd compliant mpeg2. I own, and prefer, the Dazzle Hollywood DV bridge. It's pricey, but allows any analog video source to be fed into it and outputs it to the HDD in DV (Digital Video uncompressed raw video). Of course, you'll need a Firewire card in your PC as well.

Next, you can edit the video using an editing program such as Ulead's Video Studio. Add scene transitions, background music and other neat stuff.

Finally, Ulead has a DVD plugin for Video Studio that allows you to create menu screens (also known as "authoring") credits, and first play videos, etc. Then it burns it to the DVD. I prefer to use Dazzle's DVD Complete instead of Ulead. It has more goodies and provides better results for me.

There are alot of variations to these three steps depending on what you want to do. I would need to know what's on these vhs tapes of yours and what you had in mind for the final DVD product to direct you further.
