Hi everyone, hopefully someone can help me with this terribly annoying problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N Drive. It has worked perfectly reading and writing all sorts of disks forever until about a month ago. Now when I put a disk in and close the drive, the drive seems to be loading and it does it's little beepy thing and the humming noise and then it just stops and nothing happens. If it is a DVD for instance that I'm trying to watch, when nothing happens, I try to load Power DVD. It takes like 5 minutes until PowerDVD finally loads and even then it takes forever for Power DVD to load the movie once the program itself loads. Or if I try instead to go into My Computer and click on the optical drive it stops responding. Also, something weird this drive does is, in My Computer where it should always show what's in the drive or if it's empty, whether it's empty or not the drive now shows the same disk all the time, the particular disk it shows is my Lord of the Rings disk. It never updates when something else is in there no matter how much I refresh it. Also, when I right click on the drive and go to properties, then autoplay, I can't change any of the options for it to autoplay DVD's for instance and use PowerDVD. When I choose for it to do that it simply goes back to all defaults. AND another thing it's now doing is when I have a disk inside, it won't eject when I click on the eject button on the outside of the drive. I have to "get it going" again by like right clicking on the drive in My Computer, this seems to get it working because I just right click on it and that's it and it starts humming and then ejects itself.
So what's going on? I'm so confused. Thanks in advance for any responses!
