Basically, it means that the IFO files aren't perfect. I'm not sure how to correct this, so I always use my own method to burn them. What I do is create the 2 DVD's and make sure all is ok by playing them in IFOEDIT's Play DVD function, then if it works I burn with Nero using the DATA DVD option, not the DVD Video option. It will never complain about DVD file allocation, and so long as you have a player that supports the filesystem, you should be fine. I use that method and play my DVD's on an Apex 1201, and it also plays on other such players like Daewoo and Cyberhome. Try a DVD-RW using that method on your stand-alone player and see if it works. If so, then problem solved.
Also, there is another way to fix the problem but it removes the menu and extras. You can open the VTS_XX_0.IFO of the first disc and go to VOB Extras, then select strip streams and Create new VOB files and leave everything else as usual (of course leave "Split to 2 DVD-R's" off, because it is already split). Keep all streams and strip it to a new folder. In that new folder you will have a flawless DVD that the DVD Video option of Nero will gladly burn. Do the same for the 2nd disc. You don't keep the menu or extras, but you will never have a problem when using this method. Good luck.
