can any tell me why when burning dvd the buffer keeps emptying?
the device buffer is just about keeping the thing going
speeds are dropping to below x 1,almost failing
with regards hursty

Thats usually from the IDE channels reverting back to PIO from DMA. You get slow burns and poor buffer performance. Just a guess, it could be something else too.

no dma is on both my master and slave
buffer fills up,speed/transfer rate ok,then it drops,fills back up again etc

Sounds like maybe something else using system resources. Anything running in the background besides your burning program?? How about possible spyware or adware.

if you are doing anything at all while burning this can happen and usually will happen. if i open up FireFox while burning the buffer will drop out or drop significantly and then build itself back up.....
when burning, if you don't want coasters, don't touch the computer....grab a coke and a smile while the laser does its thing. this has NOTHING to do with how fast your computer is or what is on it......its just a rule of thumb that will do nothing but keep your burning record undefeated!!! :)

CRAP. removed possible threat of adware,still no change
buffer still dropping
found i had roxio as burn engine on napstar,got rid of that(zapped as well.cheers rotary)
still no change
any ideas anyone
just an update,i have tried it with nero,seems to show no real buffer loss,task manager showing average 10%cpu usage,thought nero used more memory? "nero works" yee ha
tried copying on the fly with alcohol 120%,failure.
37 programs running along side
so cannot explain why decrypter is bottoming out the buffer?

Probably a dumb suggestion, but have you tried uninstalling the drive and restarting and letting Windows find it again?

Not too many members suggest the copy on the fly method. You have too much data to transfer. Always best to copy to the HD first and then burn back.

thats when i get the buffer loss,copying on the fly is something i never do,i just tried it

Sounds like it could be a missmatch between the read speed and write speed. Maybe your DVD ROM is reading too slow, causing the buffer to empty and perhaps generating errors.

you must have mis-understood my problem,the problem occurs when i just use decrypter to burn the file,i dont use "on the fly" very often,that was something i just tried to see if any change

First double check your pio dma make sure it is running dma. it can say set to dma but still be in pio mode. second Decrypter settings I/0 raise buffer to max 128mb.If your running windows and not running atleast 512mb of memory your what's the word pissing in the wind sideways. Personally im running 1gig of memory and I've seen DVD Shrink eat it up. Never had a problem with decrypter but I have buffer set to max 128MB. Not sure what your machine looks like at start up but you may have to many programs running on startup. Run-msconfig-startup turn some things off. 99% of that crap is not needed. when you want to run a program go start it manually.

all sorted i think.had to do drastic action of system reboot.seems ok now,but just reinstalled AnyDVD so that may cock things up again.hehe
