How can i play the .mp3's stored on my laptops hard drive through my home stereo system? i know i can go from the laptop's headphone jack into the receiver's AV inputs, but it sounds like crap when i connect that way. is there any other way to do this? thanks in advance for any help y'all.

Creative has a small USB audio device that sounds pretty decent. It even has digital optical i/o as well. I got one a few years ago for under $50.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:
